LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech director of tennis Todd Petty announced the signing of All-American transfer Kaitlin Staines on Thursday afternoon. Staines spent the last three seasons of her career at the University of Tennessee.
Â
"We are very excited to welcome Kaitlin to the Red Raider family," Petty said. Â "She has a tremendous amount of experience on the highest stages of college tennis. When we spoke I knew right away she was a fit in the culture we have here. Â She is going to do some amazing things for the Lady Raiders."
Staines, a 2019 ITA All-American in doubles, has been a three-year standout at Tennessee, contributing in both singles and doubles for the Volunteers. The Wagga Wagga, Australia native went 52-33 in singles and 56-20 in doubles during her time in Knoxville.
Â
"I am beyond excited to be joining the Red Raider family in the fall," Staines said. "Coach Todd (Petty) and my future teammates seem like an amazing group that are passionate about improving on a daily basis and working hard. While I am thankful for my time at Tennessee, I feel blessed to be given the opportunity to compete for a top Big 12 program and continue my education at another great institution. Wreck 'Em!"
Â
As a sophomore in 2019, Staines and teammate Sadie Hammond reached as high as No. 6 in the ITA doubles rankings on the way to a 27-8 doubles record to go along with a 22-12 mark in singles.
Â
Staines has succeeded on some of the biggest stages in college tennis, being slotted as the No. 8 seed at the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championships, and finishing runner-up in the doubles draw at the ITA All-American Championships last fall. In the fall, she also took home the singles title at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships and earned the doubles title at the Michigan Invitational.
Â
Staines holds a career-high singles ranking of No. 70 in the ITA poll, coming earlier this season, and has racked up seven career ranked singles wins. Staines has tallied 15 wins over ranked foes in doubles, including four over top-10 opponents.
Â
Before arriving at Tennessee, Staines excelled at the junior level, reaching a career-high ITF juniors ranking of No. 93 and reaching the semifinals or better in 10 tournaments in doubles and five in singles. Staines won the singles and doubles titles for the 2016 South Pacific Open Junior Championships and Oceania Open Junior Championships. She also claimed the doubles title at the Rumba Resort Queensland Junior Winter International 1 in 2016.
