Aberg Earns Second Professional Victory
July 16, 2020 | Men's Golf
Texas Tech sophomore Ludvig Aberg won his second professional tournament in two weeks after shooting 15-under-par to secure the Barsebäck Resort Masters title on Thursday in Sweden.
Aberg, who played as an amateur, was tied for the lead with nine holes remaining before making birdie on five of his final six holes for a five-stroke victory over Mikael Lindberg who finished at 10-under. An Eslov, Sweden native, he was coming off winning the Katrineholm Open in Katrineholm, Sweden on July 4 for his first professional victory.
"The golf I have played the last two weeks is definitely the best I have played especially in competition," said Aberg after the tournament. "It was pretty tough today with the wind so I knew a good round would put pressure on the other guys. So that was what I was thinking this morning, putting pressure on the others which was what I was doing too."
Aberg's first win took his World Amateur Golf Ranking to No. 14 from No. 38 which propelled him into the conversation for a spot in the US Open. To qualify, the top-seven ranked amateurs in the WAGR on August 19 who have not already qualified will secure their spot in the US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club which was moved to a starting date of September 17 in Mamaroneck, New York. The next ranking will be released next Wednesday.
At Texas Tech, Aberg played in eight tournaments as a freshman and was also selected to play in the Arnold Palmer Cup. He recorded his top collegiate finish by finishing eighth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate and also won the Sun Bowl Classic in El Paso playing independently. Aberg's top-10 finish at the Southern Highlands was the final tournament of the season before it was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
