January 09, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raider tennis team opens its 2021 spring season this Monday when it travels to Arlington, Texas to compete with a number of other schools from around the region in a mock dual tournament. The event will begin on Monday and run through Wednesday at the Arlington Tennis Center.

A LOOK AT THE FIELD
The Lady Raiders will be one of four teams at the event this week, which also includes Kansas, Kansas State and Utah. Texas Tech and Kansas both finished the 2020 shortened season in the final ITA rankings, with Kansas ranked No. 32 in the final poll and Tech ranked No. 48.
Â
Individually, the event features a pair of players and two-and-a-half doubles teams who finished last season in the rankings. Tech's Margarita Skriabina was ranked No. 114 in the final poll a year ago, while Kansas junior Sonia Smagina wrapped up the year ranked No. 78. In doubles, Lisa Mays and Nell Miller were ranked No. 75 in the final poll. Kansas had a pair of doubles teams ranked: Smagina and Carmen Roxana Manu (No. 50) and Malkia Ngounoue and Luniuska Delgado (No. 25)—though Delgado is no longer on the Jayhawks' roster.
Â
FALL REWIND
The Lady Raiders competed in a trio of fall tournaments to wind down 2020. In October, Tech traveled to the Texas A&M Invitational where the team combined to go 6-1 in doubles and 8-4 in singles over the course of the three-day tournament. The prior weekend, Kaitlin Staines took home the singles title to highlight a 4-1 final day for the Lady Raiders at the OU Invitational in Norman, Okla.
Â
Tech also appeared in a pair of pro tournaments during the fall, both being played in Lubbock. Most recently, Mikkelson made a strong run to the singles semifinals at the West Texas Pro Tennis October Open, while three Lady Raiders advanced to the quarterfinals.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lady Raiders will head back out on the road later this month to open the dual portion of their spring schedule, opening with a trio of matches in Norman, Okla. Tech will face Kansas State (Jan. 21), Tulsa (Jan. 23) and Oklahoma (Jan. 24) over a four-day period at the Headington Tennis Center.
