LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 20 Texas Tech women's golf team closed the opening round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in sixth place Monday after combining for an 18-over-par 306 card at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville.
Â
The Red Raiders, playing in one of the top fields in college golf, are separated from third place by only three strokes with two rounds still to play as Louisville is in third at 15-over followed by Illinois and Houston in a tie for fourth at 17-over. UCLA leads the 10-team field at 1-over, five strokes better than host Arkansas in second.
Â
Amy Taylor was consistent throughout the round to lead the Red Raiders as the senior sank 15 pars – the most in the 50-player field – en route to signing for a 3-over 75. Taylor failed to find the cup for par at only the par-4 14th, the par-4 1st and then the par-3 8th on her way to closing the day in a tie for 12th on the individual leaderboard.
Â
Gala Dumez finished a stroke back of Taylor in a tie for 17th following a 4-over round that featured birdies at the par-3 13th and the par-4 1st and par-5 2nd hole. It represented three of Texas Tech's seven birdies on the day as Chiara Horder was the only other Red Raider to drain multiple birdies.
Â
Horder chipped in a 6-over round to sit in a tie for 28th overall, one back of Anna Dong in a tie for 21st. Cecilie Nielsen rounded out the Tech lineup with a 7-over round of her own that pushed her into a tie for 34th overall.
Â
The Blessings Collegiate Invitational is unique in the sense that the field features both the men's and women's teams for all 10 schools. Texas Tech's two golf programs are fifth on the combined leaderboard at 19-over as Greg Sands' men's program fired a 1-over card of its own Monday.
Â
The Red Raiders are slated to go off the No. 1 tee box when the second round commences at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday. Live scoring will be available throughout the round at Golfstat.com.
Â
Golf Channel will continue to provide live coverage of the event with its College Central program at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday followed by live coverage from 3-6 p.m. of the back nine. The network will replay its coverage from 7-10 p.m. nightly.
