Red Raiders in Sixth After Two Rounds in Houston

Cecilie Nielsen combined to shoot 2-under over 36 holes Monday at the ICON Invitational
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team wrapped up the opening day of the ICON Invitational in sixth place Monday following 36 holes at 1-over-par at the Golf Club of Houston.
Cecilie Nielsen led the way for the Red Raiders, carding the low round for Tech's lineup in round one with a 2-under 72. She followed with an even-par round in the afternoon to sit in a tie for 14th overall entering Tuesday's final round.
Nielsen sank one of two Tech eagles on the day at the par-5 13th as the Red Raiders joined top-ranked Baylor as the only schools with multiple eagles through two rounds. Gala Dumez added Tech's other eagle on the day with a key putt at the par-5 8th, her final hole to wrap an even-par opening round.
Amy Taylor followed Nielsen in a tie for 24th at 1-over after signing a 1-under 71 card in round one and a 2-over 74 later in the day. Sofia Garcia and Anna Dong share a tie for 36th after concluding the two rounds at 3-over-par each. Dumez is in a tie for 50th at 5-over for the tournament, while Valentina Gilly, playing as an individual is in a tie for 65th at 10-over between the two rounds.
Only one stroke was the difference between Tech's two rounds as the Red Raiders were an even-par 288 in the morning session before finishing 1-over as a team over the second 18 holes. Tech leads Northwestern by one stroke in seventh place and has a four-stroke advantage over fellow Big 12 member Texas in eighth.
LSU and Baylor shared the opening-day lead as the two schools combined to shoot 12-under, six strokes better than Oklahoma State in third place. Houston, the host of the two-day event, and TCU round out the top five at 4-under and 3-under, respectively.
