Red Raiders in Seventh at Big 12 Championships

Gala Dumez sits in a tie for second overall after a 3-under-par opening round Sunday
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 29 Texas Tech women's golf team wrapped round one of the Big 12 Championships in seventh place after a combined 2-over-par 290 team effort Sunday at The Club of Carlton Woods in the Woodlands, Texas.

Gala Dumez, in her debut at the Big 12 Championships, led the way for the Red Raiders, posting a 3-under 69 that included a stretch of three-straight birdies on the back nine. Dumez was 4-under overall over the final nine holes after another birdie at the par-5 17th, placing her three strokes back of individual leader Gurleen Kaur of Baylor.

Sofia Garcia added a steady round of her own at even-par with only two bogeys and a pair of birdies coming at the par-4 5th and at the 17th. She is currently in a tie for 13th place overall as the junior will be searching for her third career top-10 finish at the Big 12 Championships over the next two days.

Amy Taylor, after a 2-under, bogey-free front nine, signed for a 2-over card for a share of 30th place. Cecilie Nielsen, meanwhile, carded a 3-over round to sit in a tie for 34th, while Anna Dong rounded out Tech's lineup in 44th place at 6-over for the day.

As a team, the Red Raiders are only five strokes back of third place as Tech is one stroke back of TCU in sixth place, three behind Kansas State and Oklahoma in a tie for fourth. Kansas and Iowa State are six strokes back of the Red Raiders in a tie for eighth place.

Oklahoma State jumped out to the opening-day lead following a 9-under round that was four strokes better than second place Baylor. Texas was two strokes back of the Bears in third place at 3-under overall.

Tech will be paired with both Kansas and Iowa State when play resumes at 8 a.m. Monday with Dong leading off for the Red Raiders. Live coverage of round two will be available via Golfstat.com.
