Tech Lands Four on Podium to Open Big 12 Outdoors
May 14, 2021 | Track and Field
Tech scores in javelin, hammer to begin conference meet.
Callie Jones grinded through four heptathlon events knowing she still had the open javelin at the end of the afternoon. Still, she landed a top throw of 157'-7" (48.05m) to place third. The bronze medal performance is how Jones opened her first career Big 12 outdoor title meet.
"Wait, didn't @_calliewallie_ just do four events in the heptathlon??"

In that heptathlon, Jones will enter Saturday sitting fifth after a great first day of her own. Jones tallied 3,345 points, using a great 100mH race and career-best high jump clearance of 5'-7.75" (1.72m) to boost her. Jones' day-high points grab was in the hurdles, where she clocked 13.99 for 980 points.
Kaylee Hinton used her senior day two weeks ago to compile a near-PR 5,809 points in the heptathlon. Friday, she showed that momentum carried into conference weekend. Hinton began the meet hot from the start, running a career-best 13.50 to win the 100mH. She would move right into the high jump, where she topped at a near season-best 5'-8.75" (1.75m) to win that event as well. After the shot put, a tie for her career best in the 200m – 24.17 – would put her at 3,472 points on the day. She will enter the final day chasing leader Lauren Taubert of Kansas State.

Kayli Johnson launched the ninth-farthest hammer throw in school history to score in her outdoor Big 12 debut. Johnson's hammer landed at 194'-11" (59.43m), eventually good for fifth place in a competitive field. Her program top-10 throw – a huge PR by nearly four full meters – moved her past Alexis Lewis' eighth- and ninth-ranked spots set in 2017.

Werner Bouwer, in his fourth Big 12 javelin competition, medaled for the fourth time. This year, he would place third. Bouwer's 221'-5" (67.50m) put the former Big 12 Champion in a firm third place of another strong field.

Gabe Oladipo managed to score in his first men's hammer title meet despite never throwing the event until this year. He landed a top mark of 201'-4" (61.37m), the ninth-best in school history. Despite having never thrown the hammer, all six of his hammer competitions this year have resulted in program top-10 times.

Tech's men competing in the decathlon were paced by Kale Mauritsen. He totaled 3,650 points by the end of his first five events. He started with two 800-plus point showings in the 100m (10.91) and long jump (23'-7.5"/7.20m) – both events in which he placed second. Fynn Zenker will also enter day two in scoring position, sitting seventh with 3,621 points. Zenker threw a PR in the shot put, landing 42'-7" (12.98m).
