Red Raider student-athletes posted the highest term and cumulative GPAs in school history this spring
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's student-athletes continue to set a new standard for academic success after posting the highest department term and cumulative GPAs in school history this spring.
Â
Texas Tech concluded the spring semester with its student-athletes from all sports combining for a 3.32 GPA, which is the highest in school history outside of the 2020 spring term when students were able to select credit or no-credit due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The strong semester raised Texas Tech's cumulative GPA to 3.38, its highest in school history.
Â
"It seems every semester now we are discussing a new standard our student-athletes have set," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "The success of our student-athletes in the classroom will always be a priority, and we couldn't be prouder to report another record-setting semester."
Â
This is the 13th-consecutive semester Texas Tech has recorded at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA among its student-athletes as all 13 athletics programs (men's and women's track and field, both indoor and outdoor, are combined into two separate teams) now boast at least a 3.0 GPA.
Texas Tech had 11 programs with at least a 3.0 GPA for the semester as the men's tennis and women's soccer programs led the way with a 3.78 and 3.74 GPA, respectively. The Red Raider football program nearly made it 12 programs, finishing with a 2.96 GPA for the semester, its highest under head coach Matt Wells.
Â
The Red Raider soccer program continues to have the highest cumulative GPA on campus as Tom Stone's team concluded the semester at 3.69, just in front of the 3.60 and 3.59 marks set by the volleyball and women's tennis squads. The men's tennis program saw its cumulative GPA rise to 3.56 following its successful semester to rank fourth among athletics programs.
Â
Overall, 298 student-athletes, roughly 70 percent of the student-athlete population, posted at least a 3.0 GPA for the semester with 215 of those (51 percent) at a 3.3 or higher. Texas Tech had an impressive 86 student-athletes (20 percent) post a perfect 4.0 GPA. The semester also featured 57 student-athletes on the President's List and 102 student-athletes tabbed to the Dean's List.
Â
Texas Tech student-athletes have a dedicated staff at the Marsha Sharp Center who guide each student-athlete to success from the time of enrollment to graduation. The Marsha Sharp Center provides space for private study, computer labs, supplemental instruction classrooms and private conferencing areas for tutoring and mentoring appointments.
