Aberg Finishes as European Amateur Championship Runner-Up

BORDEAUX, France – Ludvig Aberg finished as the 2021 European Amateur Championship runner-up after shooting 18-under-par at the Golf du Medoc Resort which put him two strokes behind Christoffer Bring who shot 4-under in Saturday's final round to claim the title. A rising junior at Texas Tech, Aberg held a one-stroke lead going into the round and shot 1-under on the last day of the championship. Â
Texas Tech's Alejandro Pedryc and Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas tied for 29th overall after finishing the four-round tournament at 4-under. Fosaas shot even-par in his final round, while Pedryc was at 1-over during his round on Saturday. Fosaas finished the event by carding 67-68-74-71 – 280 to represent Norway, while Pedryc (Poland) shot 70-70-68-72 – 280.
Aberg shot 1-under during Friday's third round which had him one ahead Bring. He completed the tournament with a 65-61-70-70 – 266 scorecard, while Bring claimed the title by signing his card at 64-64-69-67 – 264. Aberg's final round had four birdies and three bogeys and saw him close out with three straight pars. He finished the 72-hole tournament with 25 birdies, 40 pars and only seven bogeys.
An Eslov, Sweden native, Aberg began the tournament by shooting a round of 6-under, 65 on Wednesday which put him one shot back of the first-round leader Alexander Frances who was at 8-under. Frances dipped back on the leaderboard by shooting 5-over on Thursday while Aberg surged. Aberg was the top ranked amateur at the tournament at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and had not bogeyed through two rounds before making four on Friday. He also made five birdies though to take the 54-hole lead. Â
The 35th European Amateur Championship had 144 competitors from 32 different countries in the field this week before Friday's cut of the top-60. Previous champions included Sergio Garcia (1995) and Rory McIlroy (2006).
Aberg is coming off an All-American and All-Big 12 sophomore season at Texas Tech where he finished tied for eighth at the NCAA Championships and also earned victories at The Prestige, Thunderbird Collegiate and Jones Cup Invitational. Showcasing his consistency, he completed the season with nine top-10 finishes in 11 events played. Aberg competed in the Scandinavian Mixed in Sweden following the collegiate season, finishing 30th in the professional event.
