Texas Tech combined to shoot 18-under as a team Monday at the Sam Golden Invitational in Denton
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will enter the final round of the Sam Golden Invitational only one stroke off the lead after the Red Raiders combined to shoot 18-under-par over 36 holes Monday at the Wildhorse Golf Club in Denton.
Â
The Red Raiders, in their first tournament of the 2021-22 season, opened with a flurry of birdies, sinking 15 in the opening round alone to go along with an Anna Dong eagle for a 12-under 276 first round. Tech was 6-under over the final 18 holes thanks to 18 birdies to move only one stroke back of first-day leader Oklahoma State.
Â
In fact, the top of the leaderboard is comprised of Big 12 members as the Red Raiders lead Oklahoma by two strokes in second place followed by TCU in fourth at 13-under for the tournament. Texas A&M ended the day in fifth at 12-under.
Â
All five players in Tech's lineup are at least 1-over for the tournament as Amy Taylor leads the Red Raiders at 6-under between the two rounds following a 2-under 70 opener and then an impressive 68 card later in the afternoon. Playing the back nine first, Taylor drained four birdies before making the turn and then added two others at a pair of par-5 locations over the final nine holes. Â
Â
Taylor enjoys a one stroke lead over freshman Chiara Horder, who went 18-consecutive holes without a bogey to start her collegiate career before finally suffering a miscue at the par-4 9th to start the second round. She had 68 and 71 cards between the two rounds to wrap the memorable day in a tie for 10th individually, while Taylor is in a tie for sixth overall.
Â
Dong and Gala Dumez were 2-under and 1-under, respectively, over the two rounds to end the day in a tie for 23rd and 26th place. Fellow freshman Chelsea Romas rounded out Tech's lineup as she recovered from a 3-over start to shoot 2-under in the afternoon, the Red Raiders' second-lowest second round score.
Â
Facing a field with 10 NCAA Regional participants from a year ago, Tech will look to replicate the performance during Tuesday's final round, which begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available throughout the round at Golfstat.com.
