Skriabina went 3-0 last week at the Torero Classic dropping three players in the ITA rankings
LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech women's tennis sophomore Margarita Skriabina has been named the Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Skriabina had quite the opening week, as the Russian defeated three ranked players in consecutive days to take home the top singles draw title. The sophomore's performance helped the Tech clinch the overall team title at the Torero Classic hosted by the University of San Diego.
"Marg has trained really hard over the break," head coach Todd Petty said. "It's no surprise to see her make an immediate impact for us right away. She's a special young lady that makes a tremendous impact on this team, and we're incredibly proud of her and the way she represents our program."
Skriabina opened the weekend with a bang, rolling past No. 21 Alexandra Yepifanova of No. 17 Stanford in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).
On Saturday, the Russian backed it up with a dominant one and three victory over No. 22 Petra Hule from 15th-ranked Florida State.
Sunday, the Sophomore sealed the perfect weekend and the top single draw title with a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-6) victory over No. 44 Solymar Colling of host San Diego.
Skrabina is now 22-2 in her last 24 competitive matches including winning the Big 12 No. 3 singles title a season ago.
Women's returns to action on Friday for the home opener against UTEP and ACU. The UTEP match is scheduled for a first serve of 10 a.m., while the ACU match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
