Aberg named AmateurGolf.com Player of the Year
January 03, 2022 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior Ludvig Aberg has been named the AmateurGolf.com Men's Player of the Year which was awarded based on a point system earned through performance in major amateur events throughout the course of the year.Â
A junior from Eslov, Sweden, Aberg is currently No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and is coming off a fall where he not only competed for the Red Raiders but also played in two PGA Tour events.
The AmateurGolf.com website explained its selection of Aberg by saying, "Coming into the year, the college golf landscape was in turmoil, as the COVID-19 pandemic obliterated the 2020 fall schedule. Many colleges, including Aberg's Texas Tech, loaded up the spring schedule with a larger-than-normal number of tournaments in a sprint to the NCAA Championship. But Aberg was ready, having gained experience the previous summer in his native Sweden competing in the Nordic Golf League, a professional tour that feeds into the Challenge Tour in Europe. Aberg won two Nordic Golf League events and represented the winning International team in the Arnold Palmer Cup in December, so he came into 2021 well prepared. Aberg cashed in at the Jones Cup at Sea Island, grinding out a one-shot win over a trio of Walker Cuppers (Cole Hammer, Davis Thompson and Alex Fitzpatrick) by rolling in a 7-foot birdie putt on the final hole."
Aberg finished eighth overall at the 2021 NCAA Championship in Scottsdale before going back overseas for the summer where he would thrive. Aberg finished second at the European Amateur Championship in June and also played in the European Team Championship and the U.S. Amateur. His top finish in the fall season for Tech came with a ninth-place showing at The Blessings Intercollegiate.
He also made his PGA Tour debut, finishing 51st at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship on a sponsor's exemption before competing in The RSM Classic. Aberg and the Red Raiders are set to begin their spring season on Feb. 3 at the Amer Ari Invitational. The tournament is the first of sixth leading into the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Tournament.
