LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 7 Texas Tech is set to compete in its final regular-season tournament of the year this weekend at the Thunderbird Collegiate in Phoenix, Arizona.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament at the Papago Golf Club begins at 9 a.m. (CT) on Friday with 36 holes before the championship round on Saturday. The Red Raiders are represented this weekend by reigning tournament champion Ludvig Aberg along with Baard Skogen, Andy Lopez, Calum Scott and Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas. Tech senior Sandy Scott is set to compete at the tournament as an individual.
Tech will compete against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 5 North Carolina, Baylor, Boise State, New Mexico, SMU, UCLA, Oregon State, South Florida, UNLV, San Francisco and Utah.
Aberg enters the final weekend of the regular season at No. 3 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and at No. 7 in the Golfstat collegiate rankings. A junior from Sweden, he is on the Haskins Award Watch List and currently has five top-10 finishes this season after taking runner-up honors last weekend at the Aggie Invitational. Aberg shot 12-under at last year's Thunderbird Collegiate to finish in a three-way tie for the individual title.
Skogen finished fourth last week at the Aggie Invitational for his fourth top-10 showing of the season. A sophomore from Norway, he finished as the runner-up at the Maridoe Collegiate in the fall and then took second again at the Amer Ari Invitational to open the spring season in Hawaii. Skogen is currently at No. 32 in the Golfstat rankings. Lopez secured his second top-10 finish of the season with a sixth-place result at the Aggie Invitational after posting 71-77-74 during the two days in Bryan-College Station. A Plano native, Lopez also finished fifth earlier this season at The Prestige.
At last year's tournament, Skogen shot 6-under to place 16th overall and Lopez shot 2-over. Calum Scott will play playing in the ninth tournament of his freshman season, while Meen Fosaas has played in three events. Meen Fosaas played last week at the Aggie Invitational as an individual.
As a team, Tech is currently at No. 7 in the Golfstat rankings, No. 9 in the Golfweek ratings and at No. 8 in the most recent Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. The Red Raiders will return to Texas after the Thunderbird Collegiate to compete in the Big 12 Championship in Trinity, Texas from April 25-27 before the NCAA Tournament.
