Chiara Horder fired an even-par round during her Big 12 Championships debut on Friday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Chiara Horder led No. 23 Texas Tech on the opening day of the Big 12 Championships Friday as the freshman signed for an even-par 71 card to push the Red Raiders into sixth place.
Horder, making her conference tournament debut, pared each of her first 11 holes before recording her first of two birdies on the day at the par-4 12th. She added another birdie at the par-4 18th to get back to even and close her round in a tie for fifth place, three strokes back of first-day leader Caitlyn Macnab of TCU.
The performance was a bright spot for a Red Raider lineup that battled windy conditions throughout the first 18 holes at The Clubs at Houston Oaks. The Red Raiders finished at 12-over-par 296 as a team, closing the round a stroke back of No. 5 Oklahoma State in fifth place and four back of No. 28 TCU in fourth.
It was a similar outing as Texas Tech's opening round at the Big 12 Championships a year ago as the Red Raiders were in seventh place following the first 18 holes before bouncing back to finish as the tournament runner-up, their highest finish since the league formed in 1996. Texas Tech was seven strokes back of second place following its opening round last season.
The Red Raiders are only eight back of the first-day leader this year, though, as No. 16 Baylor raced atop the leaderboard after combining to shoot 4-over as a team, besting both Iowa State and No. 15 Texas by three strokes in second place. Kansas in five strokes back of Texas Tech in seventh at 17-over, one in front of Oklahoma in eighth and nine in front of last place Kansas State.
Besides Horder, Texas Tech received a 2-over 74 round from Amy Taylor, a 4-over card from Anna Dong and a 6-over score from Gala Dumez, the reigning Big 12 individual champion. Chelsea Romas, making her conference tournament debut like Horder, rounded out the lineup with a 13-over round.
Texas Tech will be back in the 9 a.m. tee group when the second round tees off Saturday morning as the Red Raiders will be paired with Oklahoma State and TCU. Live scoring can be found throughout the round at www.Golfstat.com.
