Texas Tech topped Oklahoma, 3-2, Sunday morning before downing No. 3 Oklahoma State, 4-1, at The Rawls Course
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 20 Texas Tech completed a 2-0 start to its match play event at The Rawls Course Sunday after the Red Raiders topped Oklahoma, 3-2, to start the tournament and then followed with a dominating 4-1 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma State.
With the two wins, the Red Raiders will head into Monday's final match against Tulsa with a clear shot at not only defending its home court but also securing its third-consecutive tournament title. Tulsa enters the finale with a similar undefeated record after the Golden Hurricane upset Oklahoma State in the morning round and then held off Oklahoma, 3-2, later in the afternoon.
"I was proud of our team for how we competed up and down the lineup and found a way to win," head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Our team continues to play well and will need to do so again tomorrow against a Tulsa team that played well today. We couldn't be more thankful for all those who came out to support our team today."
Anna Dong and Kylee Loewe won both of their matches to lead the Red Raiders on Sunday as Dong was 6-up on Maria Fernanda Martinez of Oklahoma in the morning round before finishing off Oklahoma State's Maddison Hinson-Tolchard at 3-up on the 16th hole later in the day. Her victory over Oklahoma State sealed the win over the highly-ranked Cowgirls.
Loewe, meanwhile, secured Texas Tech's victory over Oklahoma earlier in the day as the freshman rallied from a hole down to tie her match versus Libby Winans at the 13th before taking the lead with a par at the 17th. She picked up a close par putt at the 18th after Winans sent her approach shot long for a difficult birdie putt that went long.
Gala Dumez provided the other win for the Red Raiders against Oklahoma as she topped Meagan Winans, 5-and-3, after recovering from a slow start. Dumez, who fell to Han-Hsuan Yu, 2-and-1, later in the day, won each of her five deciding holes between the 7th and 15th to tie the match at 2-2, leaving it up to Loewe for the win.
Chiara Horder and Amy Taylor locked up Texas Tech's two other victories over Oklahoma State as Horder secured her match at the 17th to finish 3-up of Lianna Bailey. Taylor, meanwhile, barely made it into the back nine before defeating Angelica Pfefferkorn, 7-and-6, at only the 12th hole.
Each of Monday's final two matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Texas Tech and Tulsa going off the No. 1 tee, while Oklahoma State and Oklahoma will start from the No. 10 box. Live scoring will be available throughout the round at Golfstat.com.
