May 28, 2022 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – Texas Tech is tied for 12th overall at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships through two rounds at the Grayhawk Golf Club. The Red Raiders are at 24-over-par after shooting 7-over on Saturday, while Ludvig Aberg leads the team individually at 2-over which has him tied for 14th with two round to play. Â
"It was tough out there again but our guys grinded," Texas Tech coach Greg Sands said. "I liked their fight. Our mission has been pretty clear. We just have to keep playing. We haven't been too sharp yet but we'll look to put one together tomorrow."
Tech will play on Sunday morning with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. and the team needing to stay within the top-15 to advance to Monday's fourth and final round of stroke play.
Aberg will go into the third round at 2-over after posting 71-71 through the opening two rounds. A junior from Sweden, Aberg had two birdies during Saturday's round but also had three bogeys. He finished his day at 1-under through his final seven holes after a birdie on the par 3, 173-yard No. 16 hole and six pars followed a bogey on 11. Baard Skogen shot the low-round of the day for the Red Raiders with an even-par, 70 after three birdies and three bogeys in the second round. His round of 70 on Saturday followed an opening round 73 in the first round.
Sandy Scott is at 6-over through 36 holes after posting a 1-over, 71 on Saturday where he recorded four birdies. He had two birdies on both sides of the course, with two coming on par 5s. Scott also competed in the 2018 NCAA Championship but was unable to play in the national tournament last season due to injury. He is in his sixth season at Tech and is a two-time All-American. Scott has posted 75-71 through two days. Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas is at 17-over going into Sunday's third round with a 78-79 scorecard, while Calum Scott posted a 5-over 75 on Saturday in his first round. He replaced Andy Lopez in the lineup after Lopez had posted a 79 on Friday in the opening round.
Oklahoma leads the tournament at 2-over par, followed by Vanderbilt (+4), Oklahoma State (+6), North Carolina (+9) and reigning national champion Pepperdine (+16). Cole Sherwood (Vanderbilt) leads the tournament at 3-under, while Aman Gupta (Oklahoma State) and Gordon Sargant (Vanderbilt) are at 2-under.
All 30 teams at the NCAA Championships and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed playing the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in match play.
In team match-play competition, a total of five points will be available with one point being awarded for each individual match. Winning teams will advance to the semifinals and subsequently, the finals. The first team to win three points within the team match will advance, or in the case of the final match, be declared the national champion.
