The sophomore from Scotland is one of three Red Raiders inside the top 10 after 36 holes
SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Powered by an opening round 63 from Calum Scott, the No. 6 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders men's golf program sits in solo fourth after 36 holes of the Frederica Cup hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Frederica Golf Club.
Scott got his sophomore campaign off to a roaring start, as the Scottish born player fired an opening round 63 followed by a second round score of 67 to sit in solo second place after 36 holes.
The sophomore used three birdies in his first four holes and an eagle on seven to fire an opening nine-hole score of 31. After starting the back-nine with a pair of pars, Scott used an eagle on the par-five 18th hole to fire a nine-under bogey-free round of 63.
Scott one was one of three Red Raiders to break 70 in the first 18 holes Wednesday, joining Ludvig Aberg and Jack Wall who shot identical rounds of 68.
As a team, the Red Raiders fired a team score of -15 overall (345) in the opening round.
In the afternoon session, Tech rode the momentum from the morning to fire a combined team score of -19 overall (341), as all six Red Raiders in the lineup shot even par or better in the afternoon.
Aberg caught fire on the final 18, using three straight birdies on 13, 14 and 15 to fire a round of 66. Combined with his opening round 68, Aberg sits at -10 overall, which is good for a tie for eighth.
South Carolina transfer Jack Wall also shined on Wednesday, firing consecutive rounds of 68 and 67 to sit at -9 overall. Wall had nine birdies, an eagle and just two bogeys (both in round one) over the 36 holes.
Host Vanderbilt used a second round combined team score of 325 (-35) to record a two-round score of -46. Oklahoma sits just two shots behind at -44 overall followed by Georgia (-37).
Mississippi State is fifth at -26, followed by Arkansas (-16), Ohio State (-15) and TCU (+15).
William Moll of Vanderbilt fired consecutive rounds of 64 and 65 to lead Scott by one shot.

HITTING THE SAND(S) (HC GREG SANDS):
"We started well as a team, and I was very pleased with how the guys prepared. We put a decent number on the board today. We're doing the right things emotionally and doing a good job of committing to shots. Hopefully we can get out putters heated up tomorrow to catch Vandy who played a really good second round."
On Scott's performance:
"Calum shot 63 in the opening round which is a great number. He came in from the World Amateur, so I'm really happy with how he adjusted to the time change and how he was able to do something that special. He hits it long and it's wide out here, so his length shows up, especially on the par fives. He did a good job of capitalizing on those. Same thing for Jack. He hits the ball long and took care of the par fives which takes care of everything else. Overall, I saw a lot of good golf and I'm happy we're teeing off where we are as we try and track down Vandy."
