Texas Tech student-athletes recorded their second-highest term GPA in history this fall
LUBBOCK, Texas – Record-setting semesters in the classroom are becoming the norm at Texas Tech as the university's more than 400 student-athletes combined on the department's second-highest term GPA in history and its highest ever for the fall semester.
Texas Tech boasted a 3.33 fall GPA, which featured eight sport programs with a team GPA of 3.25 or better. The strong semester pushed the department's cumulative GPA up to a 3.35 thanks in part to every sport program on campus now featuring a least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.Â
"We continue to be very proud of how well our student-athletes perform in the classroom," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "This is a record-setting semester in many areas, and we celebrate this incredible academic success and achievement." Â
This is the 16th-consecutive semester Texas Tech has recorded at least a 3.0 department-wide term GPA, which is already the longest streak in school history. Texas Tech had three of its sports record their highest fall term in the past seven years, a list that included football, women's golf and women's track and field.
JoJo Robertson's women's golf program leads all sport programs with a 3.81 term GPA and now a 3.68 cumulative GPA. The women's tennis team was second with a 3.72 term GPA followed by soccer at 3.61 and men's tennis at 3.56 for the semester. The football program, meanwhile, featured a 3.13 term GPA and now boasts a 3.15 cumulative GPA, easily the Red Raiders' highest figures in both categories in recent memory.
Texas Tech had 315 of its student-athletes boast a 3.0 GPA or better this semester (72 percent), its second-highest number on record. Of that number, 65 student-athletes (15 percent) were named to the President's List, while 109 student-athletes (25 percent) were recognized on the Dean's List, which marked the most on record for any term.
"The Marsha Sharp academic services team, led by our amazing group of learning specialists, tutor coordinator, eligibility coordinators and advisors, put everything they have into the academic success of our student-athletes," said Deedee Brown-Campbell, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Excellence. "Individual and team GPAs are one of the many indicators of academic success, and we continue to be impressed with the dedication that our student-athletes have in all spaces of their lives. For a department term GPA over a 3.3, it is clear that Texas Tech student-athletes strive to be Fearless Champions in the classroom as well as their field of play."
Texas Tech student-athletes have a dedicated staff at the Marsha Sharp Center who guide each student-athlete to success from the time of enrollment to graduation. The Marsha Sharp Center provides space for private study, computer labs, supplemental instruction classrooms and private conferencing areas for tutoring and mentoring appointments.
