Behind an opening round score of -2, Tech sits in solo second
VIERA, Fla. – Powered by a torrid start from Anna Dong and consistent round of -2 from freshman Lauren Zaretsky, the Texas Tech women's golf program sits in solo second after the first 18 holes of the Columbia Classic hosted at Duran Golf Club.
In the spring opener, Dong got off to a flying start, recording an eagle, two birdies and just one bogey to make the turn at -3. Dong closed the back nine with three bogeys and birdie to end 18 holes at even par.
A true freshman from Canada, Zaretsky was extremely consistent Saturday shooting 16 holes of bogey free golf to sit at -4 overall with two holes to play. Zaretsky made a double-bogey on 17 to finish the day with an opening round 70 (-2) overall. She is currently one-shot back of the three co-leaders at -3. The double was the lone blemish on her score card that included four birdies.
Gala Dumez closed with a pair of birdies on 15 and 16 to fire an opening round 72 (Even) while freshman Shannon Tan also shot even par.
Princeton are the 18-hole leaders at -6 overall followed by Texas Tech. All the remaining 12 schools are over par.
Tulsa is eight shot backs at +6 overall followed by Penn State (+7), Notre Dame (+7) and Old Dominion (+11). Seton Hall (+20), Richmond (+21), Dartmouth (+22) and Columbia (+22) round out the top 10.
Boston U (+26), Youngstown State (+28), Albany (+30) and St Johns (+31) round out the field.
Princeton's Tanjun Liu and Yu Kyun Kim join Mathilde Delavallade of Penn State as thte 18-hole co-leaders. All three shot opening rounds of 69.
