The freshman fired five consecutive birdies, seven total, before play was suspended
FAIRFAX, Calif. – In the midst of one of the most impressive rounds in school history, Tech true freshman Shannon Tan recorded five consecutive birdies and seven total midway her bogey-free second round at the Juli Inkster Invitational, Monday hosted by San Jose State and San Francisco at the Meadow Club.
With just six holes remaining, Tan is on pace to record a career-best 65.
After opening with a round of 72 during the cold and rainy opening round, Tan used a pair of birdies on her fourth and sixth holes of the second round to get started.
Following a par on hole number 10 (her seventh of the round since she started the day on four), Tan rattled off the five consecutive birdies to pull into solo possession of first place.
Tan will have six holes remaining in the second round before the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Play was suspended multiple times Monday due to heavy rain and wind, as teams finished between 24 and 30 holes before play was suspended due to darkness.
And while Tan certainly stole the show in the second round, sophomore Chiara Horder got the day started well early for Tech. The German birdied five of her first 10 holes during round one to sit in solo first midway through the opening round.
During the hot stretch for Horder play was suspended for over an hour. After resuming, Horder closed out the opening round 69. At the time of playing being suspended for the night, Horder was two-over par just over halfway through her second round. Horder is -1 for the week.
As a team Tech sits at +1 overall, which is good for solo fourth place.
Powered by Golf Stat No. 1 Rose Zhang, top-ranked Stanford enjoys a two-shot lead over No. 11 USC. The Cardinal are -8 for the week, while USC checks in at -6.
Host and No. 5 ranked San Jose State is in the midst of a round of -5 as a team to sit at -1 overall in solo third.
Tech occupies fourth followed by No. 23 Pepperdine at +3 overall. Washington (+9), BYU (+12), Washington State (+13) and Cal (+13) round out the top-10.
Co-host San Francisco is tied for 10th with Oregon State at +18, with Colorado (+19) and San Diego State (+20) rounding out the 13-team field.
As previous mentioned, Tan enjoys the lead after day one of action at -7 overall. She's one shot clear of Golfstat's No. 1 player Rose Zhang (Stanford) and No. 28 Kajsa Arwefjall of San Jose State.
