Komac, Sayfetdinova highlight Big 12 awards for Tech
April 28, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Three Texas Tech Lady Raiders were honored with Big 12 accolades as announced by the conference office on Friday afternoon.
Both Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova racked up the awards in doubles as the duo earned All-Big 12 Second Team Doubles honors and were named the position champions at the top court. In addition, Sayfetdinova, along with fifth-year senior Olivia Peet, were also recognized with All-Big 12 Second Team Singles accolades.
This is the sixth time in program history that multiple Lady Raiders were named All-Big 12 in singles as Peet and Sayfetdinova took home the honors. Peet has been a catalyst for the Lady Raiders at the top of the lineup in singles, playing all 18 dual matches this season at the spot. With 15 overall singles wins on the year, Peet has tallied nine dual wins at court one while adding three ranked wins in the mix. The Manchester, England native has collected ranked victories over No. 43 Ariana Arseneault of Auburn, No. 124 Alina Shcherbinina of Baylor and No. 56 Thasaporn Naklo of Iowa State. Helping the Lady Raiders to a five-seed in the Big 12 Tournament, Peet recorded four wins at court one in conference play and is currently on a three-match win streak after defeating Oklahoma State's Kristina Novak in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2, last week. This is Peet's first career All-Big 12 honor after being named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in singles.
Sayfetdinova is the second Lady Raider to collect All-Big 12 Second Team Singles honors after her tremendous season at court two. Boasting 17 overall singles wins on the season, Sayfetdinova is 12-6 in dual matches and 11-6 at the court two spot. During conference play, the Moscow, Russia native tallied big wins over Maria Titova (KU), Anita Sahdiieva (BU), No. 105 Mercedes Aristegui (TCU), and most recently, a win against No. 112 Alana Wolfberg (OSU) in the Big 12 Tournament. The sophomore leads the team with five ranked singles wins and added four wins during conference play. This is Sayfetdinova's first career All-Big 12 Singles award.
For the first time in 11 years, Tech has a Big 12 position champion at the one doubles spot as Komac and Sayfetdinova became only the third duo in school history to earn the distinction. Together, Komac and Sayfetdinova have an overall doubles record of 19-8 on the season and has helped Tech win 15 doubles points. Six of those wins came in conference play where they collected a dominant, 6-1 record at the top of the lineup. Going 12-7 in dual doubles matches, Komac and Sayfetdinova lead Texas Tech in doubles wins as a tandem with 19. They've totaled five ranked wins against opponents so far, and their six wins in Big 12 play came against No. 31 Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez (OSU), No. 61 Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Malkia Ngounoue (KU), Paula Baranano and Daniella Dimitrov (BU), No. 41 Charlotte Chavatipon and Sabina Zeynalova (UT), No. 81 Helena Narmont and Yu-Chin Tsai (TCU), and Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang (WVU). Ranked No. 39 in the latest ITA rankings, the duo is the first Big 12 position champion in doubles since 2012. This is also Sayfetdinova's second year in a row earning All-Big 12 accolades in doubles.
The Lady Raiders await their postseason destination this Monday, May 1 at 5 p.m. as the NCAA Selection Show airs.
