LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore Shannon Tan announced her decision to forego her remaining eligibility as a Red Raider and turn professional on Monday. The 19-year-old elected to do so after successfully securing her card on the Ladies European Tour (LET) on Dec. 20 and is set to become the first player from her native nation of Singapore to compete on the LET as a full member.
"The time is finally here," said Tan via social media. "I am excited to announce that I am officially turning professional and will be making my professional debut this week at the Webex Players Series Murray River (Jan. 18-21), followed by the Vic Open (1-4 Feb.), before heading to Kenya to kick-off my 2024 [Ladies European Tour] season.
"I would like to thank my [Texas Tech women's golf] family – Coach JoJo [Robertson], Coach Laurie [Brower], our support team and my teammates for an incredible college golf experience. I am grateful for the unwavering support, guidance and patience that have helped me grow on and off the course.
"I am thrilled for what is to come and look forward to embarking on this new chapter!"
In December, Tan finished eighth in the final stage of Lalla Aicha Q-School in Morocco, granting her the ability to turn professional.
In what turned out to be Tan's final round of golf as a Red Raider on Oct. 23, Tan capped her career by firing a career-low final round 8-under-par 64, aiding in a career-low 54-hole score of 15-under-par (68-69-64=201) at the Jim West Challenge hosted by Texas State. Tan secured a second-place finish at the event and the seventh of her short career at Texas Tech.
Her 2022-23 freshman season included five Top 10 finishes in the regular season and a sixth in the NCAA Regionals as she finished fourth at the Pullman Regional shooting 13-under-par in her first postseason event.
Tan's professional debut comes Thursday at the Webex Players Series Murray River (leaderboard) in New South Wales, the first of two tournaments as a professional in Australia. Her first event on the LET circuit will be at the Magical Kenya Ladies Open on Feb. 8.
