Tech trails lead by one at NEXUS Collegiate

Led by strong opening rounds from Lauren Zaretsky and Maja Ambroziak, the Red Raiders trail just Kentucky after the first round of the NEXUS Collegiate at Albany Golf Club in New Providence, Bahamas.
NASSAU, Bahamas - The Texas Tech women's golf team sits in second place following the first round of the NEXUS Collegiate at Albany Golf Club on Monday. The Red Raiders fired a first-round team score of 290 to finish 2-over-par and own sole possession of second place among the 11 teams in the field.
Texas Tech will aim to catch Kentucky in round two on Tuesday, who lead the Red Raiders by five strokes and sit atop the team leaderboard at 3-under-par (285).
Following her first career individual victory at the UCF Challenge a week ago, Lauren Zaretsky opened her week with another stellar round. The sophomore from Toronto, Canada recorded a 3-under-par 69 to finish round one in second place among the field of 66 players. Aided by a round-high six birdies, Zaretsky trails Kentucky's Laney Frye by one stroke entering round two as she searches for her second consecutive individual win.
Another highlight for the Red Raiders was the performance of Maja Ambroziak. The freshman from Olsztyn, Poland came out firing on Monday with birdies on three of her first nine holes. Despite a double bogey at hole no. 12, a birdie at hole no. 14 helped Ambroziak finish her round at 1-under-par (71) and has he tied for fifth place on the individual leaderboard.
In addition to Zaretsky and Ambroziak, Texas Tech's countable scores towards the team total came from Gala Dumez and Kylee Loewe. Dumez recorded a respectable 2-over-par 74 to finish the round tied for 19th place. Loewe fired a 4-over-par 76 to round out the first round for the Texas Tech team.
On top of the five Red Raiders competing in the team competition, Texas Tech had three players competing individually. Libby Fleming led the trio with a 5-over-par 77, including birdies on hole no. 11, 14, and 15 to finish her round impressively.
Texas Tech will return to action with round two of the NEXUS Collegiate on Tuesday at 6:45 AM central time, where the Red Raiders will continue their pursuit of the top of the team and individual leaderboards.
