March 12, 2024 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – After a dominating weekend in singles, Texas Tech Lady Raider, Cristina Tiglea, was named the Big 12 Player of the Week announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
This is Tiglea's second time winning the honor as she earned Big 12 Player of the Week back on February 20. Tiglea becomes the fifth Lady Raider in program history to win multiple player of the week accolades in the same season and the first since Lisa Mays in 2021.
Â
The Milan, Italy native, who is ranked No. 85 in singles, started the week strong as Texas Tech took on No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State last Thursday. In the match, Tiglea earned the highest ranked win of her career after overtaking No. 7 Anastasiya Komar at the top court by a commanding, 6-2, 6-4 score.
Â
Moving on to Saturday's matchup against No. 65 Kansas State, Tiglea and teammate Mariya Polishchuk dominated in doubles to begin the day. The Lady Raider tandem was able to defeat Maralgoo Chomsomjav and Manami Ukita in decisive fashion at court two, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point for Tech, its 11th of the year.
Â
Then in singles, Tiglea faced another ranked opponent in No. 105 Vanesa Suarez at court one. In the first set, Suarez took the early lead, 2-0, before Tiglea won six of the next seven games for the 6-3 advantage. Then, Suarez went ahead 3-1 and 5-4 in the following set. The Lady Raider fought back – eventually tying things at 5-all. She would go on to win the next two games to claim the set, 7-5, and clinch the victory for Tech.
Â
Tiglea leads the Lady Raiders with 15 overall singles wins, nine dual singles wins and eight ranked wins. She also ties for the lead in dual doubles wins with 10, all at court two, while also ranking second on the team with 16 overall doubles wins. In picking up these victories this week, Tiglea has now reached 100 total wins in her career (46 singles, 54 doubles).
Â
Up next, the Lady Raiders (10-5, 3-1 Big 12) continue conference play on the road as they play at Kansas on March 14 and at Iowa State on March 16.
