Red Raiders advance to NCAA Championships
May 15, 2024 | Men's Golf
BATON ROUGE, La. — For the fourth straight year, the Texas Tech men's golf team is heading to the NCAA Championships.
The No. 14 Red Raiders fired an 11-under-par 277 in Wednesday's third and final round of the Baton Rouge Regional to secure their spot. It was the second-lowest card of the day behind regional champion Auburn, just one day after the Red Raiders posted the lowest second-round score of the 14 teams in the field.
Tech ultimately earned a third-place finish once play was completed at the 54-hole regional at the University Club of Baton Rouge, carding an 8-under-par 856. The top five teams earned bids to advance to compete for a National title, May 24-29, in Carlsbad, Calif.
It will be Tech's 16th all-time appearance at the NCAA Championships and 12th under head coach Greg Sands, who is in his 22nd season at the helm of the program.
The Red Raiders were powered by first and second-place finishes from Baard Skogen and Calum Scott, respectively.
Skogen entered the day 2-under-par before firing a blistering 6-under-par 66 — which tied the lowest round-three score of the regional — ending his week 8-under-par (208). Skogen did so in emphatic closing fashion as he carded a 5-under 31 on the back nine on Wednesday, including a stretch of five birdies over seven holes to help claim the victory. The win was the senior's first of the 2023-24 season, and third of his career, while also securing back-to-back years with a Red Raider as a regional top medalist (Ludvig Aberg, 2023 Norman Regional).
Scott was just as impressive in round three by contributing a 5-under-par 67 in the final round, which featured six birdies to just one bogey. Scott finished the week 6-under-par and in a three-way tie for second place, tying his best finish of the season (T-2nd, William H. Tucker Intercollegiate).
Between Skogen and Scott providing a collective 11-under-par final round between them toward the team score, seniors Vicente Marzilio and Tyran Snyders steadied the score by both firing an even-par 72 in round three giving the Red Raiders par or better scores for all four countable scores. Marzilio finished strong with a bogey-free back-nine and ended his week tied for 38th, while Snyders round three was also his lowest round of the week and placed him in a tie for 29th.
Though his score did not count towards Tech's round three score, Matthew Comegys ended a solid week 3-over-par and finished in a tie for 23rd after a closing 2-over-par 74. The sophomore has finished inside the top half of the individual leaderboard in both of his career NCAA Regional appearances dating back to last year's trip to Norman.
The Red Raiders now look forward to a trip to the West Coast for the NCAA Championships, which will be hosted May 24-29 at the Omni La Costa Champions Course in Carlsbad, Calif.
