Softball puts up 15 runs in shutout win
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball hosted Odessa College in a 10-inning fall ball exhibition on Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field. Tech won 15-0 allowing just four base runners as the pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts.
Kaitlyn Terry threw 5.0 innings allowing just one walk and striking out 10 batters as she struck out the side two times. Samantha Lincoln and Desirae Spearman combined for the final 5.0 innings, Lincoln throwing 3.0 and Spearman throwing 2.0. Lincoln had four strikeouts and allowed just two hits while Spearman recorded five strikeouts and no hits or walks in a perfect two innings.
Logan Halleman and Hailey Toney went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Lauren Allred went 3-for-4 with a pair of singles and triple while driving in three runs. Along with her pitching, Terry also got it done at the plate going 2-for-3 two RBI on a single and a double.
How it Happened:
On offense, Tech didn't get going until the fourth inning when Makayla Garcia and Halleman recorded back-to-back singles and got to second and third on an error. Lagi Quiroga drove in Garcia on a deep ground ball to shortstop and Halleman would score shortly after on a wild pitch.
The Red Raiders then put up five runs in the fifth inning after back-to-back singles again to lead off the inning but this time from Alana Johnson and Toney who would score after a triple off the bat of Lauren Allred. Jackie Lis would draw a walk, and Terry drove in Allred on an RBI single. Terry stole second and then came around to score on a sac fly from Spearman. Lis would score the final run of the inning thanks to a bat from Halleman to give Tech a 7-0 lead.
Mia Williams and Johnson walked to lead off the sixth inning before Toney drove in both Williams and Johnson with a single and some help from an Odessa error.
Toney also made an excellent defensive play at shortstop in the top of the seventh to get a 6-3 double play after stepping on second and making a tough throw look easy to first. Terry made a good defensive play of her own at first base, racing towards the dugout to catch a pop-up in foul territory.
Tech added four more runs in the eighth inning thanks to a two-run homer by Taylor Pannell. Allred then drove in Johnson with a single and Terry drove in Briana Hinson – who was running for Allred – with a double in the right-center field gap to push Tech's lead to 13-0.
The Red Raiders got the last two runs via bases-loaded walks after Toney singled, and every other Tech batter drew a walk.
UP NEXT: Red Raiders will play its last intrasquad scrimmage of the fall on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m.
