Red Raiders split day two of NFCA Leadoff Classic

Jennings, German both record three hits in comeback win over Penn State
CLEARWATER, Florida – No. 10 Texas Tech (2-1) had a roller coaster day on day two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Red Raiders lost in eight innings to No. 25 Mississippi State by a score of 3-1 before recording a massive comeback against Penn State later into the night to end on a good note.
In their first game of the day, the Red Raiders went eight innings with Mississippi State. It was a pitching duel all the way with the offense coming in the final inning. Mississippi State put up three runs in the top of the eighth thanks to four hits.
Tech had the bases loaded with two outs and were able to get a run across on a Mihyia Davis RBI but could not capitalize on the full bases.
NiJaree Canady pitched another great game, going all 8.0 innings with 12 strikeouts. Victoria Valdez, Alana Johnson and Davis all picked up hits as Tech's offense drew four walks.
In game two, the Red Raiders jumped out to an early 5-1 lead through three innings before Penn State got their offense rolling. The Nittany Lions scored eight unanswered runs to take a 9-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Chloe Riassetto started the game and delivered a solid 3.0 innings allowing just one run while striking out two batters.
Texas Tech found their offense again in seventh, scoring five runs on six hits. Makayla Garcia led off the inning with a single and two at-bats later Anya German picked up her third hit of the night to keep things rolling. Canady drove in a run with a single and Lauren Allred, who came in to pinch hit, delivered a clutch two-RBI single to make the 9-8.
With the Nittany Lions still up, Raegan Jennings stepped up to the plate in hopes of getting her third hit of the night. Jennings roped one into right field to record the game-winning RBI.
Freshman Brenlee Gonzales picked up the win in her first collegiate appearance, coming in for the final 1.1 innings and recording two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to seal the comeback victory and help the Red Raiders improve to 2-1.
Jennings and German both went 3-for-4 with Jennings picking up four RBI.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will play No. 16 Nebraska and Iowa tomorrow at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. CT, respectively.
