Texas Tech ended its historic season with a 10-4 loss to Texas Friday in the WCWS championship series
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Texas Tech's historic season ended a win shy of hoisting the national title Friday as the Red Raiders fell to Texas, 10-4, in the third deciding game of the Women's College World Series championship series.
The loss wrapped a memorable season for the Red Raiders (54-14), who not only won their first Big 12 regular season and tournament titles in school history but advanced to the sacred grounds of Devon Park in Oklahoma City for the first time as WCWS participants. Texas Tech also hosted the NCAA Regional round for the first time in history before sweeping Florida State over two games in the Tallahassee Super Regional.
"For these kids to come out and do what they did, have a new coach, a new coaching staff, three returning players come back from last year, go to work in the first of August and start grinding and grinding and trying to learn how to play for a new coach and a new staff, and then to end up in this position, playing for the national title, making it go all the way to three games, just a historic season," Texas Tech head coach Gerry Glasco said. "I'm really proud of my team and the effort that they give us from top to bottom."
Texas scored five runs in the opening inning and utilized a strong start from Teagan Kavan in the circle to win its first softball national title in history. The Longhorns (56-12) chased the National Pitcher of the Year in NiJaree Canady after the first inning, taking advantage of back-to-back RBI singles from Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart before a three-run homer from Leighann Goode.
It was the first of two long balls on the night for the Longhorns as Mia Scott pushed the lead to 10-0 in the fourth with a grand slam to centerfield. Scott finished 2-for-3 at the plate to help power the heart of a Texas lineup that had its 2-5 hitters combine for nine of its 12 hits. Kayden Henry led the way with a 3-for-4 night, which included an infield single in the first that began a run of four-consecutive base hits for the Longhorns.
Samantha Lincoln calmed the Texas bats after entering in the fourth as she tossed 3.0 shutout innings with no hits while mixing in four strikeouts. Chloe Riassetto replaced Canady to start the second inning, marking the first time since the final game of the NCAA Lubbock Regional the Red Raiders were forced to go to the bullpen.
Canady (34-7), who was joined on the WCWS All-Tournament Team by leadoff hitter Mihyia Davis, had thrown 49.0 consecutive innings for the Red Raiders up until that point, including every inning of Texas Tech's run in Oklahoma City. The five-run first inning matched the most earned runs allowed by Canady in her illustrious career as the National Pitcher of the Year simply ran out of gas following one of the most-impressive pitching performances in recent WCWS history where she combined to throw 35.0 innings with 40 strikeouts to only five walks.
"I think that we pushed it to the very limit," Glasco said of Canady returning to the circle for the third-straight day. "I think the kid gave us everything that she had. And I think the first inning was just a result of a great hitting team, a well-coached team, a well-prepared team coming up against somebody they faced three days in a row. All you had to do was look at the velocity the first night compared to the second night and tonight. And it was slowly edging away. At the same time, you're dealing with a great competitor, and you can't let her pitch all year and take the ball away from her."
Hailey Toney drove in three of Texas Tech's four runs as she finished 3-for-4 overall with a two-run single in the fifth and then a RBI single in the sixth. She provided Texas Tech's first hit of the night with a leadoff single in the fourth as she combined with Davis for five of Texas Tech's eight hits from the top of the lineup.
Davis was 2-for-4 overall at the plate, scoring on Toney's single in the fifth following an infield single of her own earlier in the inning. Davis combined for seven hits over the course of the WCWS championship series, tying Oklahoma's Jocelyn Alo for the most in history.
The Red Raiders were limited to only a hit-by-pitch to Lauren Allred in the first over the first three innings against Kavan (28-5), who turned in a complete game performance to power the Longhorns in the circle. Kaven struck out three in the win, working around eight hits and three Texas fielding errors that led to four unearned runs.
The WCWS appearance was Texas Tech's first in its history, capping an impressive first season for the Red Raiders under Glasco, the Big 12 Coach of the Year and a candidate for National Coach of the Year honors. The Red Raiders are expected to return the core of its WCWS team, including not only Canady and Davis but younger players such as key freshmen in Toney and Bailey Lindemuth.
"So many teams here have had to kind of get to the World Series first and learn a lesson and then go back and obviously learn," Canady said of the WCWS run and the potential for next season. "Like, Texas did it last year. Obviously Oklahoma had their historic run. So, yes, this year wasn't how we wanted it to go, not how we wanted it to end. But to be able to go have a team that didn't even make it to a regional the year before and to push it to a third game in the national championship series, I feel like that means a lot. Yes, that wasn't the outcome we wanted, but I feel like we're all very proud of what we did in literally a year time."
