Tech takes top-15 series against Wildcats
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 2 Texas Tech (27-2, 5-1) swept its doubleheader against No. 12/13 Arizona (21-7, 4-2) in run-rule fashion Saturday, winning by scores of 14-6 and 8-0. Kaitlyn Terry hit three home runs on the day, while NiJaree Canady delivered in the circle with a two-hit shutout.
The Red Raiders bounced back in a big way after suffering a run-rule defeat Friday night to open the series. Tech's bats came alive as it outscored Arizona 22-6 after being limited to just four hits in the opener.
Terry got the start in the circle in game one but made an even bigger impact at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs. She added a three-run homer in the second game of the doubleheader to push Tech into run-rule territory.
Samantha Lincoln pitched 2.1 innings to earn the win in game one, allowing just two hits while facing 10 batters. She helped slow a Wildcats offense that scored six runs in the first three innings but was held scoreless over the final three. Canady turned in a strong outing in game two to earn her 10th win of the season. She struck out two and allowed only two hits — one on a bunt — forcing weak contact throughout.
Taylor Pannell went 3-for-3 with a home run in game one and added an RBI single in game two while playing solid defense at third base. Desirae Spearman launched her seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning of game one to tie the score at 6-6. Jasmyn Burns finished 3-for-4 with an RBI in the opener.
Lauren Allred delivered a key pinch-hit at-bat in the bottom of the sixth inning of game one, launching a solo home run to end the contest via run rule.
Mihyia Davis recorded her 300th career hit, becoming the only active player in the country to reach that milestone. She went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two and made an extra-base-saving catch at the wall in center field. With the series victory, Gerry Glasco has now won 60 consecutive conference series as a head coach — including 10 after dropping the opening game.
How it Happened:
Game one – Tech 14, Arizona 6
Arizona carried over its offensive momentum from Friday night, building a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. Terry, who started in the circle, put Tech on the board with a solo home run in the first before the Wildcats responded with a three-run frame.
The Red Raiders answered with a five-run second inning. Pannell led off with a solo homer before Spearman tied the game with a towering three-run shot to left. Hailey Toney later scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch to give Tech its first lead of the series at 6-5.
Arizona responded as catcher Sydney Stewart hit her second home run of the day to even the score before both teams traded scoreless innings.
Tech broke the game open with another five-run inning in the fourth. Davis started the rally with an RBI single before Terry followed with her second home run of the day. Pannell later drove in Mia Williams with a single, and Lis reached on a dropped third strike, hustling down the line to force an errant throw that allowed Pannell to score from second.
Lincoln entered in relief and tossed 2.1 shutout innings before Terry returned in the fifth to escape a bases-loaded jam.
The Red Raiders added two more runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded single from Burns. Terry then struck out two of the next three batters, sending Tech into the bottom of the sixth with a 13-6 lead and run-rule territory in sight.
Allred led off the inning as a pinch hitter and, after working the count to 2-2, blasted a home run over the left-field wall to end the game.
Game two – Tech 8, Arizona 0
Tech struck first in the afternoon rubber match, using three singles, a leadoff walk and an Arizona error to score three runs in the first inning. Canady took the early lead and never looked back, controlling the Wildcats lineup in a strong bounce-back performance.
The Red Raiders added two runs in the third on an RBI single from Pannell and a delayed steal of home by Williams.
More offense followed in the fourth when Terry stepped to the plate with two on and two outs. After taking the first two pitches, she crushed a three-run homer to right field to extend the lead to 8-0 and put Tech on the brink of another run-rule victory.
Davis later made a highlight defensive play in center field to rob Arizona of an extra-base hit in the fifth. Canady retired the final three batters to secure the series win.
UP NEXT: Texas Tech will travel to Florida next week for midweek games against Stetson and Florida State before resuming Big 12 play at UCF.
