| Texas Tech Student-Athletes Excel in the Classroom Jan. 17, 2002 LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's 400 student-athletes recorded the highest grade point average in school history with a 2.93 GPA for the Fall 2001 semester. Texas Tech's athletics' Department of Student Services began keeping the records during the 1991 academic school year. With the mark, Tech breaks the old record of 2.88, set a semester earlier in Spring 2001. The Fall 2001 number also is higher than the overall Texas Tech student body (2.82). Additionally, 10 athletic programs achieved higher than a 3.0 GPA for the Fall semester: women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, soccer, women's tennis, women's track, volleyball, baseball, men's golf and men's tennis. "This speaks to the work ethic of our student-athletes," Associate Athletic Director for Student Services John Anderson said. "I also have to commend our coaches with their commitment to academics, not only their continued support, but also the type of student-athletes they recruit. Additionally, I have to commend our academic support staff and their hard work and long hours." Texas Tech graduated 25 student-athletes following the fall semester, which is also a record. Fifty-three student-athletes received postseason honors for their efforts in the classroom and competition in the fall. |
