Football star tells all
Jan. 30, 1998
Each week a student-athlete will be profiled to serve as a spotlight on Texas Tech athletics. This week's student-athlete is senior football player Dane Johnson. Dane competed in two post-season senior bowls: the East-West Shrine and the Hula Bowl. He was an all-Big 12 selection following the regular season.
Student-Athlete Profile: Dane Johnson
- Full name: Stephen Dane Johnson
- Sport--Position--Number: Football--Free Safety--13
- Why do you wear number 13? When I came to Tech number 10 was already taken. An upperclassman had the number, so coach gave me number 21. Corey Turner, who was one of our cornerbacks at the time, wanted to be number 21 like Deion Sanders, so I traded him. Coach gave me number 13, I think it was the last number left.
- What is your most prized possession? My Bible.
- Who would you most like to play against? Scott Frost because we got to know each other at the East-West Shrine and at the Hula Bowl and got to be good friends. I like him as a person and I like how he plays.
- What is something you have never been able to do? Win a national championship.
- I am better than anyone else when it comes to...telling jokes.
- An interesting fact about myself that not many people know is...I like to read.
- What is the best class you have ever taken? Guitar.
- What is your greatest athletic memory? My junior year in high school we won state in basketball. It's one of those things, I've gone to watch that tournament since I was 8 years old. I used to pick a player in the game and pretend to be them the whole game. Then all of a sudden it was me on the court.
