| Temporary Cheerleader Advisors Hired April 3, 2000 LUBBOCK, Texas - Billy Smith and Angie Anderson-Labaj have been hired as temporary cheerleader advisors at Texas Tech, according to an announcement today by Associate Athletic Director for External Operations Steve Sullivan. Smith is currently co-owner of Spirit Celebration, Inc. in Richardson, Texas and a former Texas Tech cheerleader and Saddle Tramp. Anderson-Labaj currently works for the National Spirit Group in Dallas and was a member of the Texas Tech cheerleading squad for three years, two as head cheerleader. Sullivan said the new permanent advisor's position, which will manage both the cheerleaders and pom squads, will be filled in the new athletic department fiscal year. "Due to the time commitments that our spirit squad coaches and athletic administrators are making, we have restructured the part-time spirit squad coaching positions to a full-time position," Sullivan said. "The new position will be responsible for the management, organization and coaching for the spirit squads. "The priorities for this new position are to promote school spirit, program development, civic events, community appearances, discipline and integrity," Sullivan said. "The university and the athletic department are dedicated to establishing a spirit squad program based on these priorities." Anderson-Labaj, who has won numerous honors for cheering and gymnastics, has also served as head choreographer for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Atlanta Olympic Games, the Jeep-Aloha Bowl, the Hula Bowl and the Outback Bowl. Smith has worked with the Portales (N.M) Public Schools System as an instructor and coach, as the director of summer and camp merchandising for National Spirit Group. He also currently works for Southwest Airlines as a flight attendant. Smith was a Star Search dance finalist (1991) and also performed at Six Flags Over Texas (1987). He was Raider Red (1982) and a member of the Spirit Coordinating Committee for two years while at Tech. |
