| Ware, Woods to Represent Texas Tech April 9, 1999 DALLAS, Texas - Men's basketball standout James Ware (Minneapolis, Minn.) and women's soccer performer Jamie Woods (Albuquerque, N.M.) will represent Texas Tech this weekend at the Big 12 Student-Athlete Advisory Council meetings that begin Sunday in Norman, Okla. The two will meet with Big 12 officials and representatives from the other 11 conference athletic departments to discuss isues such as student-athlete welfare, lifeskills, academics, championships and sportsmanship. The group will also discuss Big 12 and NCAA rules and regulations. "This program is a great way to learn from the other student-athletes in the Big 12 and bring back ideas that can help us give our athletes a well-rounded experience," said Steve Uryasz, Texas Tech's associate athletic director responsible for academic services. "James and Jamie have shown a tremendous interest in helping improve the experience of Red Raider student-athletes through their involvement in the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. They will represent Texas Tech very well at these meetings." The council meeting will take place Sunday and Monday at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. They occur once each semester and are attended by different designees from each University at each session. The meetings rotate among the member institutions and the Big 12 office in Dallas. Texas Tech has a Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) that meetings regularly to discuss a wide range of issues that affect student-athletes at Texas Tech. SAAB is organized through the academic services department. The group also organizes and operates the 100 Holes of Golf fundraiser that is held each April to raise money for the Stoney Garland Fund, the Special Olympics and the Texas Tech Athletic Department. --ttu-- |
