Four Student-athletes HonoredAshe Sports Scholar Awards handed out.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Four Texas Tech student-athletes were honored in May for their academic excellence, community activism and athletic prowess as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award winners, the Texas Tech Department of Student Services announced Friday. The four student-athletes from Texas Tech- track and field athlete Brandon May (First Team), junior football player Jeremy Hernandez (First Team), track and field athlete Kristopher Zepeda (Second Team) and track and field athlete Kaneshia Polk (Third Team)- combined to give Texas Tech the most recipients from a school in the Big 12 Conference. Both Nebraska and Kansas had three recipients each.
The awards are given nationally to ethnic student-athletes who exhibit academic excellence, community activism and athletic prowess. They awarded on a sport-by-sport basis.
Both May and Hernandez earned First Team honors on their respective sports. May, a sophomore biology/chemistry major from Lubbock, Texas, competes in the decathlon and hurdles. His season-best performance in the indoor 55-meter hurdle competition was a 7.48 at the Rocky Mountain Cup Invitational. Hernandez, a junior from Midland, Texas, was one of the Red Raiders' punters last year. He averaged 40.2 yards per punt last year (1568 yards-39 punts).
Zepeda, a sophomore biology/chemistry major and pole vaulter from Seagraves, Texas, cleared a mark of 15-feet 6 1/4 inches during the indoor season. He was named to the 1995 and 1996 Southwest Conference Commissioners' Honor Roll. Polk, a junior triple jumper/sprinter from Hewitt, Texas who is majoring in management information systems, owns the second best time on the team this season in the 200-meter dash with a 24.22. She ranks second on the all-time triple jump list with a mark of 41-3 3/4.
