May 8, 1998 Baseball ready for final conference series:The Texas Tech baseball team will play the final series of the regular season against Kansas State this weekend. The team was idle for 10 days during finals and returns to action Friday evening at 7 p.m. for the first of three games. Saturday and Sunday's play begins at 2 p.m. in the final home games of the seasonSumTexas Tech currently sits tied for fourth in the conference standings, with a 15-11 record in the Big 12 and 35-17 overall. After the weekend's conference games, the final seedings for the Big 12 Championships will be announced. The tournament runs May 14-17 in Oklahoma City.
Tech fastpitch awaits NCAA bid: Sunday marks the deciding moment for the Texas Tech fastpitch team as the squad will learn of a trip to the 1998 NCAA Softball Championships. Tech currently holds a 45-19 overall record and is ranked No. 17 in the national polls in only their third year of existence. The squad finished fourth in Big 12 play and fifth in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Play begins on May 14th for the NCAA regionals and culminates with the winners advancing to the College World Series May 21-25.
Men's tennis headed to NCAA Championships: For the third consecutive year, the Tech men's tennis team is headed to the NCAA tournament. The squad will face SMU in the first round on May 15th at the University of Texas in Austin. The Red Raiders are currently 11-14 and ranked No. 55 nationally.
Tech women's golf making run at NCAA regionals: The Texas Tech women's golf is in the midst of play at the 1998 NCAA West Region tournament in Palo Alto, California. Hosted by Stanford University, the event runs through May 9 at the par 73, 6,093-yard Stanford University Golf Course. After the first day, the Red Raiders sat at 16th place of 20 teams. The top 11 teams and two individuals will advance to the national tournament May 20 in Madison, Wis.
Zana Zlebnik to compete at NCAA tourney: For the first time in Red Raider history, a women's tennis singles player will be competing at the NCAA Companionships. Freshman Zana Zlebnik, ranked No. 61 nationally, was selected to join the field at the individuals tournament May 25-29 at Notre Dame University. Only one doubles team in Tech women's tennis history has ever seen post-season play.
