| Robert Burton Named Associate Athletic Director at Nebraska May 15, 1998 LUBBOCK, Texas - Robert Burton, Texas Tech University associate athletic director for compliance, has been named the associate athletic director for sports Administration at the University of Nebraska. Burton will be responsible for the administration and supervision of 19 of Nebraska's 23 varsity sports, with the exception of football, men's basketball, women's basketball and women's volleyball. He will oversee budgets, personnel, scheduling and compliance for his assigned sports. He is scheduled to assume his new role in early August. "Bob has certainly done a lot for Texas Tech during his time here," said Texas Tech President Dr. Donald R. Haragan. "We hate to see him depart. He was a valuable part of our athletic program. "Nebraska is his home. It was an opportunity for him to go home to a recognized program. We want to keep up the excellent work that he's done in the compliance area when he leaves." Burton fills the position that became available when Al Papik moved to football to assist with the direction of football operations in August of 1997. While at Texas Tech, Burton helped complete the NCAA investigation into the Red Raider athletic department and analyze the entire compliance system at the institution. He also helped identify and implement financial aid and eligibility systems, including changes in personnel and restructuring of the compliance department. "Bob has been a tremendous asset to our department over the last year," said Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers. "We are certainly going to miss him. When you hire outstanding people, you expect other institutions to show interest. It's an appointment Bob couldn't pass up when you consider the chance to go home to be near he his family and work at his alma mater in this role." Burton served in a similar position at Oklahoma State University where he served as the assistant athletic director for sports administration and compliance from 1993 to 1997. He oversaw Oklahoma State's Olympic sports programs and the training and strength and conditioning programs. "I am very excited about coming back to Nebraska," Burton said. "I enjoy working with coaches and student athletes, and Nebraska's broad-based program will be a great challenge. My experiences at the NCAA, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech have helped me prepare for this position. Further, Krista and I are looking forward to spending more time with our families in Nebraska." An attorney at law, Burton served as a legislative administrator for the NCAA from 1989 to 1993. He has served on the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators Executive Committee and the subcommittee of Big 12 Directors of Compliance. Although he has served in athletic administrative positions around the country for the past decade, Burton is no stranger to the University of Nebraska. He received his bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Nebraska in 1985 and his juris doctorate from the University of Nebraska School of Law in 1989. "I'm delighted that we were able to persuade Bob to return to Nebraska," said Bill Byrne, Nebraska's director of athletics. "Bob is one of the bright, young athletic administrators in the United States, and a Nebraska grad to boot. We look for him to be a strong part of our senior administrative team, and a key player in our compliance program." Burton is a native of Falls City, Neb., and graduated from Falls City High School in 1981. He and his wife, Krista, originally from Omaha, have a three-year-old daughter, Elly. |
