Tech Names Downing to Associate AD Post
| Tech Names Downing to Associate AD Post Aug. 1, 2001 LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers announced today that Steve Downing has been named Associate Athletics Director for Sport Programs at the university. "We're excited to have a person of Steve's quality and experience to direct many of our sport programs," Myers said. "His experience and background will be a big asset for our coaches and student-athletes." Downing has been a member of the Indiana University Athletic Department since 1979, most recently as an Associate Athletic Director for Sport Programs. Downing oversaw the sports of men's basketball, baseball, field hockey, and softball at IU. Downing also assisted the athletic departments at IU's regional campuses and also led the department's high school relations. "I'm happy to be coming to Tech," Downing said. "I feel that Texas Tech is a comfortable fit. I want be involved with all sport programs at Tech, not just basketball, and I want to contribute to the student-athletes and coaches the experience I've gained throughout my career." Downing, who lettered in basketball at Indiana from 1971-73, was the Big Ten Conference's Most Valuable Player as a senior in 1973 and helped lead the Hoosiers to a third-place finish in the NCAA Tournament that same season. The only player in Indiana history to register a triple-double, Downing averaged 20.1 points per game and 10.6 rebounds during his senior season. A first-round selection of the Boston Celtics in 1973, Downing played in the NBA for two seasons and was a member of Boston's 1974 championship team. Following his NBA career, Downing counseled students at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and earned a master's degree in counseling from IUPUI. He earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University. |
