Enhanced Logos Unveiled
Aug. 17, 1999 LUBBOCK, Texas - Not only is the playing surface new for the 1999 football season at Jones Stadium, there?s also an enhanced version of a Texas Tech standard adorning midfield. In an effort to increase visibility and further stimulate consumer awareness, Athletic Director Gerald Myers announced today a trio of enchanced versions of Texas Tech?s famous ?Double T? logo. The most basic of the new logos, a more colorful and three-dimensional version of the famous ?Double T?, will adorn the new turf at Jones Stadium.
All three versions of the new mark are primary marks, with more sport specific logos to come as secondary marks. Also in the works are youth marks and multi-cultural marks for Texas Tech. Raider Red will remain a part of the Texas Tech logo family. ?We are very excited about these logos, which are designed to enhance our existing marks, not replace them,? Myers said. ?These logos are a way to display enthusiasm for Texas Tech and our athletic teams while maintaining the ?Double T? which represents our heritage and tradition. ?The University, spearheaded by the Athletic Department, has conducted extensive research in an effort to develop these marks,? Myers said. ?We have included students, faculty, staff, ex-students, fans and members of the general university community in the development process. We will continue to seek their input as the process continues.? Myers also said that increased marketing efforts and licensing opportunities played a part in Texas Tech partnering with SME Design of New York and The Collegiate Licensing Company of Atlanta to develop a plan for increased visibility through logo and word mark enhancement. ?Over the past few years it has become apparent there is a need for a fresh look to help sell our merchandise and keep us current in the market place,? Myers said. ?These enchanced marks, and some new ones to come, provide us with a consistent look which provides licensees and retailers an opportunity to be more creative with Texas Tech merchandise.? Nearly 300 collegiate and professional sports programs have contracted with SME Design for assistance in developing updated or new logos. Included on that client list are Big 12 members Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Iowa State. Also listed as SME clients are the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, Texas Rangers, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. The Collegiate Licensing Company, or CLC, represents product licensing and trademark rights for intercollegiate athletic programs all over the country. Eight institutions in the Big 12 have their licensing rights protected by CLC. In addition to Texas Tech, other CLC clients in the Big 12 are Texas, Nebraska, Baylor, Kansas State, Missouri, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Myers said he expects merchandise with the new logos to be available in Lubbock, the remainder of the state and nation very soon, at the very latest by the start of the upcoming basketball season. He emphasized the new marks will be released to licensees very soon. The more sport specific marks, as well as the multi-cultural and youth logos, are expected to be unveiled within the next month, according to Myers and Senior Associate Athletic Director Bobby Gleason, who chaired the logo committee. |

Versions of the logo, which incorporate the Texas Tech name, along with either ?Red Raiders? or ?Lady Raiders? bannered across the smaller T, will also soon be visible in Red Raider athletic facilities and publications.
