Tech Athletics Addresses Sportsmanship Issues
| Tech Athletics Addresses Sportsmanship Issues Nov. 1, 2001
LUBBOCK, Texas - Citing Big 12 Conference and Texas Tech University sportsmanship guidelines and Jones SBC Stadium security guidelines, the Texas Tech Athletic Department will enforce a no-tolerance policy in regards to throwing objects from the stands onto the playing surface or sidelines at home football games. Those abusing this policy will be immediately removed from the stadium by University personnel. The Big 12 Conference sportsmanship code states that a 15-yard penalty can be enforced on the home team when an object is thrown onto the field of play. Texas Tech has been penalized in the past for objects landing on the playing surface. "This is not the image Texas Tech wants to portray to our opponents or those watching our games on television," Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers said. "This conduct is not condoned by Texas Tech and will not be tolerated. "We want a strong home-field atmosphere, but at the same time, we don't want our fans to show an abusive, malicious behavior," Myers added. "We have observed this type of conduct in the past and it will not be tolerated." Persons entering the stadium with tortillas will be asked to throw them away prior to being allowed entry. Stadium security will be strictly enforced. |
