Texas Tech Leads in Academic All-District Honorees
November 16, 1998 LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech placed four football players, more than any other school, on the 1998 District VI GTE CoSIDA Academic All-America football team, it was announced today. Junior quarterback Rob Peters (Katy, Texas), sophomore kicker Chris Birkholz (Temple, Texas) and raiderbacks Reagan Bownds (Eldorado, Texas) and Keith Cockrum (Goldthwaite, Texas) were named to the honor team and will be forwarded to the ballot for consideration to the Academic All-America team that will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Peters has a 3.9 grade point average in his accounting major and is the Red Raiders' starting quarterback. Birkholz owns a 3.55 g.p.a. in his pre-dentistry major. He was named the Big 12 Specialty Player of the Week after kicking a school-record-tying four field goals against Texas last weekend. Bownds has a 3.7 g.p.a. in agribusiness, while Cockrum has earned a perfect 4.0 g.p.a. in finance. Cockrum is the president of the Texas Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board. "We are really proud of the successes we achieve in the classroom and these four student-athletes exemplfy academic axcellence," said associate athletic director Steve Uryasz.
