Basketball Academic All-Big 12 Teams

DALLAS - Top performers on the field also are among the elite in the classroom as the league office announced its 73-member women's and men's basketball Academic All-Big 12 teams today.
On the women's side, Lady Raiders Rene Hanebutt and Elisha Walker were members of the first-team, while Alicia Thompson was honorable mention. For the Red Raider men, Ross Carmichael and Andrew Patterson were first-team selections and Brock Barnes was an honorable mention honoree.
A total 48 women's student-athletes are honored, including 27 who have started at least 10 games this season. Of the 25 men represented, there are 15 who are considered starters.
Nominated by the directors of student-athlete support services and the athletic media relations directors, members of the all-academic teams have posted at least a 3.0 grade point average either cumulative or the previous two academic semesters and are regulars, i.e. letterwinners, on their respective teams. First-team honorees are regulars who have at least a 3.2 grade point average while those student-athletes with grade point averages of between 3.0 and 3.19 are listed as honorable mention.
Special recognition goes to Jennifer Jackson of Kansas and Desiree Taylor of Oklahoma, who were both nominated with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Jackson is starter for the Jayhawks and is third on the team with an 8.7 scoring average while Taylor is averaging 13 minutes per outing for the Sooners with a 3.0 scoring mean.
On the women's side, Nebraska has five players who are starting or have started for at least 10 games this season. Senior Anna DeForge currently ranks fifth in the Big 12 in scoring (18.5) and heads the Huskers' list as an honorable mention selection. Starting teammates Jami Kubik, Cori McDill, Charlie Rogers are first-team choices and Emily Thompson join DeForge on the academic squad.
Three of Iowa State's women's starters are on the team, including the senior tandem of Janel Grimm and Jayme Olson. Cyclone sophomore Stacey Frese leads the Big 12 in assists, 5.9 per game and is seventh in scoring with a 15.3 average. Kansas State also placed three starters on the women's team - Jenny Coalson, Brit Jacobson, and Kimberly Woodlee. Additionally, Oklahoma placed three starters - seniors Shonika Breedlove and Roxanne Long, and junior Michele Workman, whose sister Kelly is also honored on the OU squad. Colorado's two honorees are both senior starters - La Shena Graham and Alexis Felts.
Missouri sophomore Julie Helm is the top scorer on the women's academic squad at 20.0 per outing, good for is third in the league. Tiger teammate Ekpedeme Akpaffiong is the other Missouri starter honored.
Joining Jackson is Kansas starter Jaclyn Johnson. Other starters on the women's team include Oklahoma State's Jennifer Crow and Cheri Edwards, Texas' Kim Lummus, and Texas A&M's Prissy Sharpe and Kim Linder.
On the men's side, Big 12 champion Kansas and Texas A&M led all schools with four honorees each on the academic all-league team. Every one of the Aggies honored are regular starters led sophomore Brian Barone, son of head coach Tony Barone, an Academic All-America baskerball player at Duke. Other Aggie starters on the academic squad include Aaron Jack, Steve Houston, and Larry Thompson. Jayhawk starters honored include T.J. Pugh, and Ryan Robertson.
Two of Iowa State's and Kansas State's top three season scorers are honored. For the Cyclones junior Klay Edwards (10.0 ppg) and sophomore Paul Shirley (8.4 ppg) have made the academic squad as is junior Shawn Rhodes (11.1 ppg) and senior Aaron Schwartzendurber (9.1 ppg) for the Wildcats. Also on the list is Nebraska junior starter Andy Markowski.
Oklahoma starters Renzi Stone and Ryan Humphrey are also academic honorees as is Texas Tech sophomore starter Ross Carmichael. Colorado placed three freshmen on the squad with Jamahl Mosely, Ernest Renfroe and Aki Thomas.
