TANGSHAN, China - The 1998 USA Basketball Women's R. William Jones Cup Team fell to China's National Team Monday night, 66-62, in its final exhibition game. Angie Braziel (Texas Teach / Odessa, Texas) led the USA with 12 points and tallied five rebounds. The Jones Cup Team will travel to Beijing on Tuesday to prepare for the 1998 R. William Jones Cup Tournament which begins August 23 in Taipei, Taiwan.
"I thought our effort was good tonight. We competed hard and we played hard for 40 minutes but fell short at the end. China had a very experienced post player inside who hurt us. We still must improve our transition defense to be the team we want to be," said Nell Fortner, USA Basketball head coach.
China began the game with an 11-0 run, and at 13:57 Tamika Catchings (University of Tennessee / Duncanville, Texas) hit two free throws to give the U.S. its first points of the game to stop China's scoring spree. The U.S. fell behind 17-4 with 8:30 remaining in the first half until Braziel triggered an 8-0 run to pull the Americans within five, 17-12. The U.S. kept the game close and ended the first half trailing by six, 30-24.
In the second half, China increased its lead to 11, 41-30, with 16:22 left on the clock, but the U.S. went on a mini run of its own and pulled to within four, 41-37, at 14:20. Braziel, Catchings and Edwina Brown (University of Texas / Lockhart, Texas) each hit baskets to pull within two, 43-41, with 12:25 remaining. The USA cut China's lead to two points three times in the following minutes until Lynn Pride (University of Kansas / Dallas, Texas) hit one of two free throws to bring the U.S. within one, 57-56, but China scored the next five points and went on to earn the 66-62 victory.
Catchings scored 11 points and recorded seven rebounds and three steals for the U.S. Brown and Semeka Randall (University of Tennessee / Cleveland, Ohio) each added 10 points, while Randall also added three steals. Pride registered seven rebounds, while Tamika Whitmore (University of Memphis / Tupelo, Mo.) tallied four rebounds.
