LUBBOCK, Texas - NAIA Division I College of the Southwest jumped on top early with five runs in the second inning and held on to defeat Texas Tech 7-4 Monday evening at Dan Law Field. The loss snapped Texas Tech's 27-game home winning streak and broke a 35-game winning streak against non-NCAA Division I schools. The last time Texas Tech lost to a non-NCAA Division I school was on March 18, 1994 when it was handed a 6-4 loss to New York Tech.
College of the Southwest (15-27) took advantage early on with five runs in the second inning. The Mustangs used RBI singles from Bubba Perry, Jerry Corliss, Nester Gonzales and Remo Coccimiglio to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
College of the Southwest added two more runs on home runs. Jerry Corliss launched a shot in the fourth inning and Shane Leatherwood added an insurance run in the eighth inning.
Texas Tech (34-10) could never recover from the early deficit. College of the Southwest starter Sean McMullan went the first 5 1/3 innings and allowed five hits, four runs (three ER) and four walks while striking out five Tech batters. The Red Raiders came back with two runs in the second inning on Trey Lunsford sacrifice fly ball and a Jason Huth RBI single. Tech crept closer at 5-3 with a run in the third on a Mustang error following singles by Jon Weber and Chaz Eiguren. The Raiders battled back to a 6-4 deficit on an RBI groundout from Lunsford in the fourth inning.
Mustang reliever Samuel Purham entered the game in the sixth inning and shut down the Red Raiders allowing only one hit and six walks in 3 2/3 innings. He earned the save after keeping Tech in check with men on base. Texas Tech had the bases loaded in the sixth inning but could not convert. Tech had two men on base in the bottom of the ninth but three flyouts ended any chance at a comeback. Overall Texas Tech stranded 11 runners.
Corliss (two-RBI), Shane Leatherwood and Robert Graham each finished with two hits apiece for College of the Southwest. Texas Tech's Daniel Cole (0-1) earned the loss. Texas Tech will play its fifth game in five days tomorrow against Southwest Texas State at Dan Law Field beginning 2:30 p.m.
