Day Two at Big 12 Championships Complete

WACO, Texas - Almost the entire Texas Tech team competed on Saturday as half of the field events and all preliminary races took place under warm weather conditions at the Hart-Patterson track and field complex in Waco, Texas. With three women qualified for the finals in their event, two excellent relay teams ready to compete and Leigh Daniel a favorite to win the 5,000 meters the Texas Tech women's team stands poised to have their best Big 12 finish ever. The men will count on Desmond Johnson, Shameron Turner and David Leigh to score a majority of their points tomorrow. Sunday will be the final day of action at the championships. The finals of all races, as well as, the remaining field events will take place. Field events will begin at noon while running will begin at 5 p.m.
Day Two - Big 12 Championships
Saturday's Qualifiers
Ngozi Iwu qualified for the finals in the women's 400 meters with a time of 54.75 to finish second in her heat behind Suziann Reid of Texas. Her time was the fifth fastest of the day in the event. Iwu, an NCAA provisional qualifier in the race, took fourth in the 400 meters at the Big 12 indoor championships.
Desmond Johnson qualified for the finals in the men's 400 meters by winning his heat with a time of 46.79, his and the team's best of the season. His time was the third fastest run in the preliminary rounds. He will race on Sunday in what should be one the meet's top contests.
Tami Zachary qualified for the finals of the women's 100 meters with a time of 11.80. She was third in her heat. It was the eighth fastest time in the preliminaries of the event and her second fastest time of the season. This will be her first time competing in a Big 12 finals race as an individual.
Shameron Turner will advance to the finals of the men's 200 meters after running a time of 21.00. It was the fourth fastest time in the prelimaries. Turner, who competed in the event at the NCAA indoor championships, finished second in his heat just behind former Big 12 champion Brandon Couts of Baylor.
Sherri Coleman qualified for the finals in the women's 200 meters after running a 23.96 - her fastest time of the season. Coleman had the seventh fastest time of the preliminaries and was the only Texas Tech woman to advance in the event. It will be Coleman's first time competing in a Big 12 finals race as an individual.

WOMEN - Sha Bloxom took 13th in the women's pole vault with a mark of 3.11 meters - it was her best jump of the year - Kaneshia Polk took 16th in the long jump with a mark of 5.66 meters while teammate Jodi Jones was 21st with a mark of 5.40 meters - Kristen Koppes took 21st in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:53.75, Courtney Nolen was 24th at 5:00.85 - Sherri Coleman finished 10th overall just short of qualifying for the finals in the 100 meters with a time of 11.84, Monique Cruse-Wright was 18th at 12.31 - Aimee Roberson finished fifth in her heat with the 14th best time in the 800 meters at 2:19.37 - Tracey Anderson was 17th in the women's discus with a throw of 41.32 meters - Ngozi Iwu was 14th in the 200 meters at 24.73, Tami Zachary was 16th at 24.74 and Nina Roberts 17th with a time of 25.51
MEN - Desmond Johnshon failed to qualify for the finals of the 200 meters by .01 seconds after running a 21.51 - it was his best time of the season in the event - Michael Franklin was 11th in the 200 at 21.58, Scott Jesko was 14th at 21.70 and Matt Levy was 21st with a time of 22.93 - Shameron Turner just missed qualifying for the finals in the 100 meters finishing third in his heat with a team 1999 best of 10.44 - he finished 11th overall in the prelims - also in the 100 Michael Franklin was 14th with a time of 10.60 and Matt Levy 24th with a mark of 11.14 - Rusty Purser took 10th in shot put with a throw of 15.86 meters - it was his second best effort of the season - Samson Ngetich finished third in his heat with the 17th best time in the 800 meters at 1:54.64 - Tsepo Williams was 17th in the long jump with a distance of 6.79 meters, Zelvis Applin followed him at 20th with a mark of 6.68
