WACO, Texas - Leigh Daniel continued her domination of the women's distance scene by winning the conference championship in the 5,000 meters on Sunday. Daniel led the team by scoring 20 points, while both relay teams performed well and three others reached the finals of their races to score additional points. The team matched the 1998 squad for the best team finish at the meet with tied for 10th. On the men's side Shameron Turner and Desmond Johnson showed why they are two of the top sprinters in the conference. Turner finished 2nd with a time of 20.88. Johnson was 3rd was a provision qualifying mark of 45.90 Also, scoring points for the team was emerging distance runner David Leigh. He scored in two races taking fifth in the 10,000 meters and 8th in the 5,000 meters. The men's 4X100 and 4X400 meter relay combined to score 8 points with two fifh place finishes.
Sunday's Point Scorers
Leigh Daniel won her second conference championships of the meet taking first in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:44.18. Daniel set a new conference meet record and now runs her undefeated streak during the outdoor season to seven straight races. She will race again in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the national championships at Boise, Idaho on June 2-5.
"I was more scared about this race than any other in my career due to the build up of the versus Sherri Smith of Baylor. But, it made it a lot of fun. I'm glad she didn't have enough at the end to catch me."
"Winning this race ranks just behind nationals because of the hype surrounding it. This feels like a big accomplishment."
Ngozi Iwu was eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.84. She scored one point for Texas Tech
Tami Zachary finished sixth in the 100 meters with a 11.81. It was her second best time of the season. She scored 3 points for the women
Sherri Coleman took seventh in the 200 meters with a finish of 24.01 seconds to score 2 points. It was her second best race of the outdoor season.
Women's 4X100 relay team of Monique Cruse-Wright, Sherri Coleman, Ngozi Iwu and Tami Zachary finished seventh in the contest with a time of 45.68. They finished sixth in their heat. It was their top time of the season.
Women's 4X400 relay team of Nina Roberts, Sherri Coleman, Ngozi Iwu and Kaneshia Polk was sixth with a time of 3:45.58 to score three points.
Shameron Turner took second in the men's 200 meters with a time of 20.88. His eight points is the most scored by a Red Raider individual male at the meet. His race time was his second best of the season.
Desmond Johnson finished third in the 400 meters with a season best time of 45.90. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships and currently ranks 23rd in the nation in the event. Johnson scored six points for the Red Raiders with his finish.
David Leigh scored in his second race of the event after placing eighth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:48.02. Leigh scored five points for the men's team at the meet. It is the first conference points of his career.
Men's 4X100 relay team of Scott Jesko, Shameron Turner, Mike Franklin and Desmond Johnson finished fifth with a time of 40.65 after winning their heat of four teams.
Men's 4X400 relay team of Scott Jesko, Shameron Turner, Mike Franklin and Desmond Johnson won their heat with a time of 3:09.93 and took fifth overall in the competition. It was the top time for a 4X400 men's relay team at Texas Tech in 1999

WOMEN - Kristen Koppes was 12th in the 5,000 meters after running a 17:37.35, Tara Hangge was 22nd at 18:32.34 while Courtney Nolen was 23rd with a mark of 18:36.70 while Kaneshia Polk was 9th in the triple jump with a mark of 12.09 meters
MEN - Rusty Purser finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 48.64meters while Brandon Phsigoda was 15th at 45.60 meters...Boniface Ndungu finished 11th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:53.18while Jesse Williams was 28th at 16:10.68...Tsepo Willaims was 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 13.55 meters
