Mark Austry two-run ninth inning home run gives Tech come-from-behind victory
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- No. 13 Texas Tech used a two-run ninth inning home run from Mark Austry to defeat No. 4 Southern California 9-8 at Dedeaux Field. Tech, which began its eight-game California road swing with a victory over the defending national champions, improved to 6-0 on the season while USC dropped to 1-4.
Trailing 8-7 with two outs in the top of the ninth, Austry blasted a 2-0 pitch over the fence to straightaway centerfield to give Tech a 9-8 lead. Junior Brandon Roberson pitched the final inning for his first save in a Tech uniform.
Austry finished 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Ryan Ruiz went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI, Allen Marshall went 2-5 with an RBI and run, Scott Holzhauer went 2-4 with an RBI and run, Miles Durham finished 2-4 with an RBI and run and Jon Weber finished 1-4 with two RBI.
Texas Tech built a 7-4 lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Jon Weber's two-RBI triple and Ryan Ruiz' RBI single gave Tech its 7-4 lead. But USC battled back with four runs in the seventh on a Eric Munson three-run home run and an RBI double from Justin Lehr. That put USC up 8-7 and set the table for Austry's game winning home run.
The Red Raiders battled back from a 4-1 deficit with two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. Miles Durham drove home an RBI on a double and Scott Holzhauer scored on a USC error in the fourth inning while Allen Marshall's RBI single scored Tech's one run in the fifth.
Starter Brad Ralston struck out 11 batters in his 6 1/3 innings pitched. He allowed nine hits and seven runs (six earned). Chris Sampson (1-0) earned the victory after pitching 1 2/3 innings and Roberson retired three straight batters for the save.
The win gave Texas Tech its first 6-0 start since 1996.

Trojans defeat Texas Tech baseballers 5-3
LOS ANGELES -- No. 4 Southern California took advantage of two home runs as it handed No. 13 Texas Tech a 5-3 loss Saturday at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles. Tech dropped to 6-1 on the season while Southern California snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 2-5 overall.
USC received a break in the fifth inning when Ryan Ruiz singled to rightfield driving home Brennan Burns and David O'Keeffe. But USC appealed O'Keeffe's run, saying that he missed third base. The appeal was accepted and instead of tying up the game at 4-4, USC held a 4-3 lead.
USC scored an insurance run in the sixth inning when Beau Craig's sacrifice fly to centerfield scored Dominic Correa. That gave USC a 5-3 lead. USC scored one run in the second on a Justin Gemoll solo home run, two runs in the third on Eric Munson's two run home run and one run in the fourth on Brian Barre's RBI single.
Tech threatened several times putting runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not force a run across.
Texas Tech jumped on top first with two runs in the second inning on a Brennan Burns RBI double and a Lance Woodcock RBI single.
Brennan Burns led Texas Tech with a 2-4, two run and RBI performance while Lance Woodcock, Joey Hart, Ryan Ruiz, Jon Weber and Josh Bard all registered hits for Texas Tech.

Munson's Home Run Lifts No. 4 USC Over No. 13 Texas Tech 5-4
Texas Tech Baseball drops to 6-2 overall
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Eric Munson's ninth inning solo home run gave No. 4 Southern California a 5-4 victory over No. 13 Texas Tech Sunday at Dedeaux Field. With the victory Southern California won the three game series 2-1. Texas Tech won game one 9-8 while USC took game two 5-3.
The Red Raiders fell to 6-2 on the season while USC improved to 3-5.
With two outs, Munson nailed a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for the victory. Munson, a first team All America catcher, finished the day with two home runs and a 2-4, four RBI afternoon. Munson put USC up 3-0 with a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Carlos Casillas hit a solo shot in the sixth inning to put USC up 4-0.
Tech spent most of the afternoon battling from behind. USC starter Justin Lehr held Texas Tech hitless until the seventh inning when Jon Weber looped a single over the shortstop's head into leftfield. Josh Bard followed with a double and Allen Marshall drove both Bard and Weber home with a three-run home run. USC still led 4-3.
Texas Tech tied the game in the eighth inning when Lance Woodcock got on base with a single, advanced to second on Ryan Ruiz' sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single from Jon Weber.
Brandon Roberson (1-1) earned the loss after pitching 1.2 innings, striking out three batters and allowing only one hit- Munson's solo home run. Starter Shane Wright went seven innings and allowed 11 hits, four runs (4 ER) and two walks. He struck out eight batters.
Texas Tech is next in action tomorrow at Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. PT (4 p.m. CT).

Loyola Marymount Defeats Texas Tech 6-3
Red Raiders to take day off before playing in San Diego State Classic
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Loyola Marymount handed No. 13 Texas Tech a 6-3 defeat at George Page Stadium Monday evening in Los Angeles. The loss drops No. 13 ranked Texas Tech to 6-3 overall while Loyola Marymount improvedto 4-5 on the season.
Texas Tech takes a day off to travel to San Diego to play in the San Diego State Classic this week. The Red Raiders will play four games in four days including games against San Diego, San Diego State, Oregon State and UCLA.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Texas Tech battled back to tie the game at 2-2 with a Jon Weber home run. Ryan Ruiz singled and Weber followed with his fourth home run over the left centerfield wall. The Red Raider scored one run in the eighth inning when Lance Woodcock scored on Josh Bard's RBI single. The Raiders couldn't take advantage of a bases loaded situation in the eighth inning.
Loyola Marymount's Michael Schultz (2-0) pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed 10 hits and three runs (3 ER) for the win. Chris Gray pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the season.
Loyola Marymount put the game out of reach with a three-run seventh inning. The Lions used an RBI single from Curt Fiore and a sacrifice fly RBI from Jacob Minter. The rally was sparked by a triple steal in which Matt Riordan stole home on a Steve Rowe pitch.
Weber led Texas Tech with his home run and 2-4, two RBI performance. Josh Bard went 2-4 with an RBI and double while Marco Cunningham, Mark Austry and Scott Holzhauer each went 1-3. Allen Marshall, Miles Durham and Ryan Ruiz each went 1-4.
Texas Tech reliever Steve Rowe (0-1) earned the loss after pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing four hits and four earned runs. He struck out six batters. Cesar Gutierrez went the first 3 2/3 innings while Daniel Cole pitched the final inning.

San Diego Tops Texas Tech Baseball 13-10
Toreros battle back twice to defeat Red Raiders
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- San Diego handed No. 13 Texas Tech a 13-10 loss in the first game of the San Diego State College Baseball Classic Wednesday at Cunningham Baseball Stadium. The Red Raiders dropped to 6-4 on the season while San Diego improved to 6-2 overall.
Texas Tech lost its fourth straight game for the first time since 1992 when Tech lost six straight in the beginning of the season.
The Red Raiders built a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning but San Diego battled back. Tech used a RBI single in the first inning from Josh Bard, a second inning RBI double from David O'Keeffe, a two-RBI triple by Allen Marshall in the third inning and RBI singles in the fourth from Bard and Jason Huth to build its 6-0 lead. San Diego came back to tie with two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth inning.
Tech quickly took the lead back in the sixth inning with a three-run inning to lead 9-6 but the Toreros scored two runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to defeat Texas Tech.
Marco Cunningham led Texas Tech with three hits. He went 3-5 with three runs, Ryan Ruiz finished 2-4 with an RBI and two runs, Allen Marshall went 2-4 with two RBI, Josh Bard went 2-4 with three RBI, David O'Keeffe went 2-3 with an RBI and run and Jason Huth finished 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Kevin Reese (1-0) earned the victory after pitching two innings for San Diego. Chris Sampson earned the loss for Texas Tech.

Texas Tech Baseball Defeats San Diego State 6-2
Tracey pitches first complete game of year as Raiders use four-run ninth inning for victory
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Texas Tech used a four-run ninth inning to break a 2-2 along with a complete game pitching performance from Kevin Tracey to defeat San Diego State 6-2 Thursday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory improved Texas Tech to 7-4 and snapped a four-game losing streak. San Diego State dropped to 6-5.
Junior starter Kevin Tracey (2-1) allowed only four hits and two runs (two earned) in registering a complete 9.0 innings pitched game, his first of his career and the first for Texas Tech this season. Tracey also struck out nine batters and walked three in his 34 batters faced.
"Early on my curve was working," Tracey said. "Then it got sharper and sharper as the game wore on. My teammates really picked me up in the ninth inning and helped us pull it out. We needed this win. It's a huge win with Brandon Roberson and Shane Wright coming up next. It feels good to get back on track."
Texas Tech broke a 2-2 tie and won the game with four runs in the top of the ninth. Lance Woodcock led off the inning with a walk and Jason Huth sacrificed Woodcock to second. Marco Cunningham walked, Ryan Ruiz followed with a clutch RBI infield single. Jon Weber followed with an RBI single and Josh Bard drilled a two-RBI double to put Tech up 6-2.
Texas Tech scored its first run in the third on an RBI single from Jon Weber. Ryan Ruiz drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning tying the game at 2-2.
San Diego State scored first with a solo home run by Paul Lockhart in the first inning. After that pitch, Tracey held the Aztecs hitless and scoreless for 21 batters and six innings. The Aztecs tied the game in the eighth inning on an RBI single from Edgar Gonzalez.
Weber led Tech at the plate with a 3-5, two RBI and double performance. Ryan Ruiz drove in the game winning RBI and went 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Marco Cunningham continued his hot streak with a 2-3 performance and Josh Bard went 1-5 with two RBI.
San Diego State reliever Chris Dunwell (0-1) earned the loss. Texas Tech is next in action today against Oregon State at 3 p.m. PT (5 p.m. CT) at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The game will be broadcast on KKAM 1340 in Lubbock.

Texas Tech Defeats Oregon State 14-9
Jon Weber drives in five runs while pitcher Clancy Fossum contains Beavers to win second game in row
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- No. 13 Texas Tech used two timely its from Jon Weber and clutch relief pitching from Clancy Fossum to defeat Oregon State 14-9 Friday at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium. Texas Tech improved to 2-1 in the San Diego State College Baseball Classic. The Red Raiders also improved to 8-4 overall while Oregon State fell to 6-4.
Jon Weber sparked Texas Tech with a five RBI, 3-4 hitting performance. His biggest hit came in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and Tech leading 7-6. He drove in three runs on a triple off Oregon State reliever Jed Mitchell, giving Texas Tech a comfortable 10-6 lead. Weber also finished the evening with three runs scored.
"I just try to go out and do my job," Weber said after he upped his season RBI total to 32. "Every time you go up there with the bases loaded, you just try to do the best job that you can. I was fortunate to get a good pitch- a curveball that kind of hung there- and I just took advantage."
Fossum (1-0) entered the game in the fifth inning and finished off the game for his first career win at Texas Tech. He struck out one batter and allowed five hits, three runs (3 ER) and three walks in four 1/3 innings and 21 batters faced. Starter Brandon Roberson went 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing nine hits and six runs (4 ER).
"After I got that first out in the fifth inning, I felt like I pitched well," Fossum said. "Our hitters took over the ballgame tonight. We'll be extremely happy to get a win tomorrow. We need a win to get into conference play on a role."
Texas Tech (8-4) fell behind early with a 3-0 deficit in the fourth inning. But Tech scored four runs in the fourth to grab a 4-3 lead on a two RBI single from Jason Huth, a sacrifice fly ball from Jon Weber and an RBI single from Josh Bard. Oregon State quickly cameback with three more runs in the fifth to go up 6-4.
Led by Weber's triple, Tech then rallied for its six-run fith inning to take a commanding 10-6 lead and never looked back, staying one step ahead of Oregon State for the rest of the evening. Brennan Burns led off the inning with a single and after a wild pitch, scored on Mark Austry's RBI double. Austry scored on a wild pitch while Lance Woodcock, Marco Cunningham and Ryan Ruiz all walked, loading the bases for Weber's key three-RBI triple.
The Raiders also added a run in the seventh on Josh Bard RBI double and three runs in the eighth on a Marco Cunningham's sacrifice fly, Ryan Ruiz' RBI double and Jon Weber's RBI single.
Oregon State pitched walked 13 Texas Tech batters, the second highest bases-on-balls total for Texas Tech this season. Oregon State reliever Rob Greenwald took the loss and dropped to 0-1 on the season.

Texas Tech Defeats UCLA 13-5
Red Raiders win third straight game, Wright pitches complete game, Burns, O'Keeffe hit home runs
SAN DIEGO, Calif -- Texas Tech grabbed a 5-0 second inning lead and never looked back in defeating UCLA 13-5 Saturday at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory was the third straight win for Texas Tech and improved Tech's record to 9-4 overall. UCLA dropped to 7-10.
The game ended Texas Tech's eight-game road trip. Texas Tech finished 4-4 on the trip, won its last three games and ended the San Diego State Classic with a 3-1 record.
Senior pitcher Shane Wright (3-0) earned the victory after pitching his first complete game of the season. He went the complete nine innings and allowed eight hits and five runs (three earned) and no walks. He also struck out five batters in 38 batters faced.
The Raiders gave Wright an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Marco Cunningham scored on Jon Weber's RBI groundout, Ryan Ruiz scored on a wild pitch and Brennan Burns scored on a UCLA error. Tech added two runs in the second on RBI singles by Jon Weber and Brennan Burns.
Texas Tech went up 8-0 with three more runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Mark Austry and Lance Woodcock and a UCLA error.
Brennan Burns hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left centerfield in the sixth inning to put Tech up 9-3. Burns, who redshirted his first collegiate season with UCLA, hit his first home run in 158 at-bats and 174 plate appearances.
Tech put the game away when David O'Keeffe slammed a 420-foot three-run home run to straightaway centerfield to give the Raiders a 12-4 lead.
O'Keeffe led Tech with a 3-5 day including three RBI on his home run. Brennan Burns finished 2-3 with three runs and two RBI, Ryan Ruiz went 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, Marco Cunningham had two doubles and went 3-5 with two runs and Jon Weber had two RBI on 1-5 hitting.
