CORAL GABLES, Fla. --Ryan Bordenick stunned Texas Tech with a ninth-inning grand slam over the center-field wall, giving South Carolina a 9-8 triumph Friday night at the NCAA Atlantic I Regional.
Texas Tech led 8-2 after seven innings before the Gamecocks (44-16) rallied with three runs in the eighth and Bordenick's dramatic slam.
Mike Curry walked and Adam Everett and Derick Urquhart followed with singles to load the bases with nobody out against Brad Ralston (3-4). Bordenick then crushed a 1-1 pitch for his 19th homer of the year, setting off a jubilant celebration at home plate.
Tech (44-19) will play top-seeded Miami (47-10) in an elimination game at 11:00 CT Saturday morning.
South Carolina, the only remaining undefeated team in the Atlantic I Regional, will play Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT against the winner of the Miami and Texas Tech game.
Third-seeded North Carolina (40-22) pulled the upset of the day, staying alive with an improbable 6-5 win over top-ranked Miami. Fifth-seeded Florida International (41-23), which will play the Tar Heels Saturday afternoon at 2:30 CT, eliminated No. 6 Bowling Green (34-21), 13-7, in Friday's first game.
Patrick Sexton (3-1) pitched three innings of hitless relief for the win. Starter Brett Jodie lasted just 4 2-3 innings, giving up nine hits and five runs.
South Carolina's Clint Collins hit a three-run homer in the eighth to bring the Gamecocks within 8-5. That chased Texas Tech starter Monty Ward, who struck out 12 in seven innings.
South Carolina (44-16) had led 2-0 early before the Red Raiders scored eight consecutive runs.
Mark Austry went 4-for-5 with four RBI to lead Texas Tech, including a two-run homer. Curry hit a solo homer for South Carolina.
