The 1998 Big 12 Coach of the Year, she has led the Lady Raiders to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, seven consecutive and five NCAA Sweet 16 appearances in six years, including the NCAA National Championship in 1993. While in the SWC, Coach Sharp and the Lady Raiders never finished below third, they won or shared the last five championships, and they captured three Post Season Classic titles. Sharp captured her 350th career victory during the 1997 NCAA Tournament when on March 16 Tech defeated Montana, 47-45, in Palo Alto, Calif. A 1974 graduate of Wayland Baptist University, Sharp was named National Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994. She also reaped SWC Coach of the Year honors seven times, five consecutively. Wrap-Up of the TTU-Colorado Game
Rene Hanebutt, who scored a career-high 33 points against
Nebraska
three days ago, had 27 Wednesday night to lead No. 11 to an 83-71
victory
over Colorado on Wednesday.
Texas Tech (24-3 overall, 13-2 Big 12) had to rally to overcome Colorado (13-12, 6-9), which shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the first half to lead 38-33 at the break.
The Lady Raiders, who shot only 30 percent from the field (11-of-36) in the first half, switched things in the second half, outshooting Colorado 63 percent to 41.
Joining Hanebutt in double figures for Texas Tech were Melinda Schmucker with 13 and Angie Braziel with 12.
Nikki Weddle led Colorado with 16, Linda Lappe had 14 and Kami Carmann and Melody Johnson had 12 each. Texas Tech hit 8-of-20 3-pointers, Colorado 4-of-10.
About Texas
Jody Conradt and the Longhorns bring a five-game winning streak
into the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum - two of those games were on the
road.
Texas posts a 3-4conference road record.
Leading the Longhorns is junior forward Edwina Brown who averages 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. She shoots nearly 51 percent from the field and plays nearly 32 minutes per game. Senior guard Kim Lummus adds 12.4 points per contest and is Texas' three-point specialist, hitting 37 percent of her three-point attempts.
As a team, Texas scores 72.6 points and allows 65.7 points per game. The Longhorns outrebound their opponents (+4.0) and make 34 percent of their three-point field goals.
The Series Record...
Texas has the upper hand over the Lady Raiders in the series
history, 44-12, but under the direction of Marsha Sharp, Texas Tech is
30-13 against the Longhorns. Earlier this month, Texas handed the Lady
Raiders a 74-70 loss in Austin. The last time Texas Tech lost to the
Longhorns in Lubbock took place on Jan. 20, 1993 as Texas defeated the
Lady
Raiders, 76-75.
Earlier this Season against Texas...
As her teammates went 2-of-14 from 3-point range, junior forward
Edwina Brown scored 23 points on slashing drives to the basket and
handed
out 10 assists to lead the Longhorns to a 74-70 upset of
the Red Raiders on Feb. 6 in Austin. Brown was 10-of-14 from the field
and
Texas (12-9, 6-5 Big 12) shot 51 percent.
"We didn't have an answer for Edwina Brown," said Tech coach Marsha Sharp. "She was the difference in the game with the things she made happen."
Brown's ball handling and scoring drives pulled Tech's defense off Texas' two freshman starters, forward Tracy Cook and center Rashunda Johnson. Cook and Johnson combined for 27 points and 12 rebounds. "She (Brown) was so solid today, and she was really balanced," Conradt said.
Brown scored eight points in a 10-2 run at the end of the first half that sparked the Longhorns to a 33-25 lead they would extend to 48-35 in the second.
Braziel led Tech with 19 points on 9-of-16 shooting but was held to four rebounds, half her average. Texas outrebounded Tech 38-34 and held a decisive 22-11 advantage at halftime.
Among the Best in the Nation...
After opening the 1998-99 season with a preseason ranking of
#12,
the Lady Raiders have steadily climbed up in the polls since November.
In
the weeks following, Texas Tech spend time at #14, #15, #13, #12, #10,
#8,
#7, and as high as #6 before dropping to its current position of #11 in
this week's Associated Press poll. In this week's USA Today/ESPN poll,
Texas Tech is ranked #7.
