Mastercard Collegiate Golf Rankings Released

PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Nevada-Las Vegas men and the University of Arizona women are the top-ranked teams in collegiate golf in the sixteenth edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, which are administered by the College Golf Foundation and compiled by Golfstat, are determined by a computerized point system formula, based strictly on performance. The next date for release of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings will be Wednesday, May 6, 1998.
University of Arizona senior Rory Sabbatini is the top-ranked men,s player for the ninth consecutive week. Sabbatini's best finish this season was at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in October, where he won individual medalist honors. Sabbatini, who was named the Rolex College Golfer of the Month for October, has finished in the top five in five tournaments this season. In his other tournaments of the fall, Sabbatini finished third at the Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate in September, and tied for third at the Taylor Made Red River Classic in October. So far this spring, Sabbatini placed second at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate and fourth at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Classic. In his last two tournaments, Sabbatini finished sixth at the U.S. Collegiate Championship in St. Augustine, Florida and tied for sixth at the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational.
Arizona State University freshman Grace Park is the top-ranked women's player for the eleventh straight edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. Park, who won the Rolex Fall Preview at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin, set a tournament record with her 54-hole total of six-under par 210. Park's other top finishes of the fall include a third place finish at the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate in October and a tie for fourth place at the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational in November. This spring, Park's top finish was at the SJSU Spartan Invitational where she tied for second place. In her last two tournaments, Park tied for fifth place at the Pac-10 Conference Championship and tied for fourth place at the Ping/ASU Invitational. Park has also tied for tenth place at the SMU/OSU Regional Challenge and tied for 11th place at the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic, both in February.
In the men's team MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, UNLV retains its top spot with 391.080 points. UNLV started off the spring with a flurry, winning its first three events. The Rebels won the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate, The Taylor Made Big Island Intercollegiate and the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Classic, all during the month of February. The Rebels also won their last tournament, the BELLSOUTH Yellow Pages Intercollegiate in Cary, North Carolina three weeks ago. UNLV leads the Rolex Collegiate Tour with six team victories this season. In its other tournaments this Spring, UNLV finished third at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, third at the Golf Digest Collegiate Invitational and fourth at the Cleveland Golf/Morris Williams Intercollegiate. During the fall season, UNLV also won the Ping/Golfweek Preview in September and the Rolex National Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships in November. Clemson is in second place with 334.773 points and Georgia Tech is in third with 319.440 points. Arizona, (305.677) in fourth place, and Georgia (299.710), in fifth place, round out the top five.
On the women's side, Arizona holds the top spot for the second week in a row, with 349.970 points. Arizona won its second consecutive Pac-10 Conference Championship last week, its third team title of the year. The Wildcats, which have finished among the top three in 10 of 11 tournaments, won two events during the fall. The Wildcats won the Rolex Fall Preview (Madison, Wis.) in September and the Rolex National Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships (Miami, Fla.) in November. Arizona's other top three finishes in the fall include a second place at the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational and a third place at the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate. So far this spring, the Wildcats have second place finishes at the SMU/OSU Regional Challenge, the SJSU Spartan Invitational and the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Arizona also has two third place finishes; the SunTrust Lady Gator, and the Ping/ASU Invitational. Arizona State is a close second, trailing by just over nine points, with 340.840 points. Rounding out the top five are Tulsa (330.403) in third place, Georgia (319.763) in fourth place, and Duke (292.030) in fifth place.
The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings will also help to determine the College Players of the Year for both men's and women's college golf, using a season-long computerized points system that includes all Rolex Collegiate Tour events, all conference championships, and the NCAA Championships (both regional and national). This June the men's and women's Division I award winners will be presented their awards by Jack Nicklaus prior to the start of the final round of The Memorial in Dublin, Ohio.
