HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Texas Tech University mens golf team is currently in eighth place on Monday after the first two rounds of competition at the 1998 Big 12 Conference Mens Golf Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas. Held at the Prairie Dunes Country Club, the Red Raiders fired rounds of 326 and 312 on the par 70, 6,593-yard layout.
In team competition, Texas sits on top of the pack, carding 606 on the day. Following close behind at 607 is Oklahoma State. The Longhorns Brad Elder and Oklahomas Hunter Haas are tied on top of the individual hunt. Both shot a seven over 147 for the first 36 holes to sit three strokes ahead of the three-way tie for third place.
The Red Raiders are lead by junior Philip Tate who shot an 80 on the first 18, then improved to 76 in round two to hold on at tied for 20th. Sitting in the teams second scoring spot is freshman Gant Bills at tied for 23rd. Bills carded a 78 and 79 in the first day of competition. Tom Baldwin (161) is tied at 34th made up the most ground with a second round 78, Matt Loving (165) holds on in the t43rd position, and Mark Garica (167) is tied for 48th. The final 18 holes will take place Tuesday at the Baylor-hosted event, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. Last year, Tech finished 12th overall at the conference championships, totaling 952 on the tournament.
